Finger Joints!
GrandBRATS were being just that ….BRATS. Decided to try to hide in the shop for most of the day…...would have worked, too…..but I got "ratted out" by the Shop Cat. He kept banging on the door to the Dungeon Shop, until somebody let him in…....Drat.
Well, I checked the four sides, found one was a bit out of flat. Not from warping, just the dummy running the bandsaw. Clamped the offending part to the bench, and plane things flatter..
Corners were off, at the diagonals. Planed until straight edge said it was flat. Not perfect, but close enough for now.
Laid out the toys for today's activities..
Couple of chisels, a backsaw…
Marking knife and a square. Wound using a larger square for some items. Set the pairs up. First the longer sides.
Bookmatched according to what was sawn. Set them IN the vise. Used the chisel as a marking gauge. I laid it on the end grain, make a line, move to the other side of the line, mark another…until I had the ends all marked. Backsaw to split the lines. Had to rub a candle on the saw's plate. Got one end marked and sawn, flip the pair end for end, and marked the other end's line. Then more backsaw work. All during this time, the camera decided it needed charged up. Finally got the battery "level" back up.
All the while, I kept chopping out waste pieces. Black marks are from some dummy spray-painting… I'd use a square and the marking knife to score a stop line across. Then use the chisel and mallet to chop out half of each finger. Flip the board over, and do it all over again. Kept at it, until the two long sides were done at both ends..
Next,I had to do the shorter "end" pieces one end at a time. I laid one end of a longer side on top of the end piece.
Pencil to draw out where the pins will go. Had a straight edge alongside both,so things will turn out square later
This time around, I used the bandsaw to cut fingers with (NOT mine, though..) I cut right on the waste side of each line. Back to the bench, and chop out the waste. Test fit?
Moved around to each corner, cutting and chopping away..while sitting on the Shop Stool. Test fits as I went along
I also marked each "half" of this joint as #1, hoping I can keep each corner in order….
Friction fits, mind you. Finally got all four corners done…
Finger joints didn't look too hateful..
While I was at the bench, marked out for a couple bit holders. At least for length and width…..hmm, nothing in the stash is wide enough? We have ways..
Resaw to get enough stuff for two thick bit holders. Why so thick?
When some of the bits are in the 18-20/16" range… Will have two holders for the BIG bit, and one thin one for the other bits. Right off the bandsaw, there is no way I can do a glue up with these blanks, sooo
Yep, it is "plane work" alright. Got enough blanks surfaced S4S and square to allow some glue to be spread around
Finally got it into the clamps..
I'll let this sit overnight. Maybe tomorrow, unless I'm playing hooky from the shop, I can flatten this blank out, and start on number 2. Then the real fun can begin…...stay tuned, could be Verrry Int ter estink…....
