Hello,

I'm looking at two CL ads today. One is for a Performax 16-32 for $650 and the other is the Grizzly G0458 18" for $550.

The Grizzly seems to have mixed reviews. The reviews for the Performax look pretty good. The Performax is a bit older though. It has a leeson 1HP motor and a 2.5" dust port.

Thoughts on either machine? How bout price?

Thanks

The Performax is overpriced . the 2.5" port indicates to me that it is an earlier model. I have the Performed with the 4" port and dust collection is very good. With a 2.5" port I suspect it won't do the job. I've had a nightmare getting the feed belt to track after replacing it. I did buy an expensive rubberized version but haven't installed it yet. It is NOT for dimensioning as it would take forever but I have good success with pre final sanding at 100 or 150 grit. Anything finer than that and the abrasive burns even with light passes. Anything coarser than 80 grit and the grit seems to bounce off the wood leaving an undesirable coarse finish. I use mine a lot and would buy it again but I only use it for sanding wide panels before I card scrape them. I also use it to sand down thin pieces with a sled and it works well for that. No experience with the Grizzly.

I don't have any experience with the Performax….

However, I love my Grizzly G0458!!!
I purchased it used, this past June off of CL….
It has seen lite use and has had no issues, once getting the feed belt tracking properly.
Feed belt tracking wasn't as difficult as some made it out to be….

As far as price goes…. I may not be the most unbiased, impartial judge of price.
I try not to pay more than 25% of "new retail" for CL tools/machines.
I actually got my G0458 for $200.00….

Seeing as how it lists for $949.00 (including shipping)....
$550.00 seems reasonable, provided it is in excellent condition!!!
Anything less than pristine, your offer should follow suit. IMHO.

I've heard good things about Performax, so either should serve you well.
You will LOVE having a drum sander!!!
Happy hunting…

Thanks guys. I was going to go look at the performax and offer him around $400, but someone got there and paid the full price before I did. Oh well.

I bought a Performax 22-44 plus back in 06, It was close to parallel when I got it but I went a bit OCD and tweaked it a smidge. I've run a lot of wood through it, the only problem I have with it is I need to keep buying sandpaper.
