Quick question from a newbie about bandsaws.

I made the mistake of buying a cheap $200 bandsaw from Sears not knowing what all I would use it for. At the time I bought it for cutting corners in cutting boards. It doesn't do the best job at cutting anything thicker than half an inch. It likes to lock up & quit running.

Now, I'm looking for something to resaw lumber I get from the local sawmill. I was also told I could make some of my own veneers (smaller sizes) with a nicer bandsaw.

My local WoodCraft recommended the JET Model # 708115K 14 in. 10-Amp Bandsaw with Closed Stand. This is the link to it from Home Depot: http://www.homedepot.com/p/JET-14-in-10-Amp-Bandsaw-with-Closed-Stand-708115K/203695001

I've also been looking at the new RIDGID Model # R474 14 in. Bandsaw. This is the link to it from Home Depot: http://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-14-in-Bandsaw-R474/205653861

I've been pleased with my Ridgid tools thus far. I have their table saw, planer, router, sanders, drills & impacts. Their lifetime warranty is what attracted me to them when I first started buying. Is it worth the extra money to purchase the JET? Or is there something else out there that I'm missing? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! :)

For what is worth, don't see many if any complaints on the Jet 14". That is one I would pick over the Griz-they tend to have good resale value in my area.
Seems to be a 14" Saw price war between the usual suspects.

Sounds like its time to take it to the next level. I see a jet in your future, get the one with nice fence & x large motor. if too pricey, like the others stated grizzly but no ridged (sorry)

I just got the Rikon 10-325 14" band saw, I'm very impressed with it so far. I bought some wood slicer blades and I have re-sawn pine, walnut and hedge up to 5" thick with no issues. This is the first real band saw that I have used, I had the bench top sears band saw, almost useless. I did a lot of research and decided on the Rikon based on re-saw capability, warranty, other owner reviews and cost. I'm very happy with it. There are a lot of nice band saws available, so do your research and decide what works for you.

I have a 14" Jet (slightly older model) with the riser. It is a wonderful saw but if you are going to be resawing a lot of long/wide boards you are going to want something with more power… like a 17" saw.

I was resawing 4ft long 8" wide birch the other day with a brand new viking resaw blade from lee valley and it was super slow going. Lots of stalling.

Although I love JET products and have their drill press and 6" jointer Im not sure about their bandsaw after reading the Iturra review on their older model. Iturra documented problems with the JET tension screw chewing up the casting in the older model; and also the lower blade guide being lower than the Delta it cloned. For just a bit more than 750 dollars you can get the Grizzly G0513 anniversary or polar bear 17" band saw with more power and resaw capabilities. Just a thought. Tom

Spent half of 2014 looking at band saws, and while i did not see a Grizzly G0513 in person, that family of saws sure does look like a good value to me. I also liked the way they had different bundles (the alphabet at the end of the model number). I finally gave up on finding a decent used machine and had decided on a G0513, but was trying to make up my mind on which features when i stumbled into a Bulgarian made Laguna 14" with a Resaw King on it for a very good price-made the decision for me!!
