New workshop 7,138 km away

We all dream of getting a new purpose built workshop. I finally had the opportunity.
with my wife getting moved for her work. I got to leave my cramped workshop with no windows and minimum power behind, to move to a purpose built shop.

There were quite a few issues with this move, first of course being the distance, 7,138 km. Logistically, if you forget it, it stays behind. Plus with a moving company, they do not move things like glue, finishes, or great piles of boards like I had.
So that was really the first and most painful hurdle, giving away six truckloads of wood. It did go to good friends who are woodworkers who will use it, and I did get to have some wood moved, so I kept the choicest boards.
still, it's hard to see your woodpile drive away

The other issues I found were that I could not have the shop size I wanted( I was limited to 600sqft), and I could not have the washroom I wanted (the town would consider it living space).
So, this whole endeavor started with a few compromises. such is life.

What I did get, is 600sqft poured slab workshop with 9ft ceilings, and a 200 amp electrical panel.

now, the work begins. winter is here in the snowy part of the country, and I need to insulate and heat this new space before I even unpack my tools.

so here is the new shop with all the stuff that will be stored in it, I tried to keep everything away from the walls so I can insulate.

I did leave up a pic of my old workshop on my profile for now, so this can be compared to my old cubbyhole.

I will be having a heating specialist in this week, so I should be moving along briskly with any luck.

Hi JJ,
Congrats on the new space. I have a band saw very similar to yours. Mine is a 20" Rockwell.
Its a Wood/Metal Cutting Saw with variable speed controlled by a cast iron foot pedal.
The frame on mine looks identical to yours.
Tage Fried had one of these machines.

slow insulation

well, i am definitely not off to the speedy start I envisioned when I started this workshop blog. There have been some roadblocks. Entirely to do with winter, and isolation.

to start things off, I wanted to use roxul soundproof insulation for the shop. So, I went looking at the three local building supply stores. Turns out, everyone here still uses fiberglass batt insulation. So that was a special order.
oh, and twice the price of what I was used to paying for it.
so I got it, installed it,and was short by two pieces, and had to order one more package.

Building Wood Flooring Floor Wood stain

Wood Gas Beam Room Attic

So, I got the insulation and vapor barrier on the walls. meanwhile, I had been trying to find a sprayfoam contractor for the attic. no luck, the one guy around doesn't work in the winter. So I would have to wait till April. I understand, but I need heat before then. so it looks like I will be doing blown in insulation myself.

I was going to use a woodstove for heat, backed up with electric. But after much consideration, I decided it would be introducing too much moisture into the shop regularly, plus would require space for itself and stacking fuel, space I do not want to lose.
the solution I think I have settled on is propane. a bit pricey to get installed, but should meet my needs without costing space, or amperage from the panel. I just need to get the insulation finished and the ceiling drywalled before I have it installed.
Wood Floor Flooring Hardwood Beam

I am still hoping to be working on furniture soon, it just may have to be in my basement.

Some of what I wrote never showed up with the preview, nor when I submitted. even though it was in the text box. Weird. just more rant for the next entry i guess.

Is roxul like rock wool? Good to see the ply on the walls, it males for a strong building and for mounting anything. Deer heads, old truck grills ect but for me it's projects not done! Yer close to up & running. Like that screw vice too.

Nice to see it coming along, I'm sure you can't wait to have your shop functional again, I know when I moved (only two doors down, not 7000 km ;) I was getting really frustrated not having my shop in a usable state. Cheers, from the west coast!

Thats all for now

Moving my shop across country has had many unanticipated challenges. But mainly, I just do not have the energy or finances to complete the shop before i start using it. I expect even if I had the cash, my shop would always be a work in progress, and not having turned out any of my designs in a while has me feeling low.
So, I am going ahead with projects as-is, and will make do as i find issues.

I am currently completing a set of small tables I have had drawings of for awhile. So this is what I call my shaker project, the first project in the new shop that allows me to shake out the wrinkles. It has highlighted some deficiencies, such as a pattern vise and veneer press, which I have rectified.
It has also highlighted some machine and room deficiencies, mainly that I have 5 extra machines waiting to be rebuilt that are taking up space. So I am trying to make a point to work on those, and probably sell them off when they are done. I guess I just don't have the room or energy for two hobbies.

I am also trying to better record my process as I build pieces, so a better camera and lighting are also on the burner.
I have some more pictures of the workshop in that section of lumberjocks. I would love to hear what people think. http://lumberjocks.com/JuniorJoiner/workshop

one thing I have noticed is that when you update your workshop, it doesn't come up anywhere. so no one ever comments. please comment, i can take it.

Looks like you have a nice size space, good tools from what I can see. Often moving cross country can get one down in the dumps cause there is nothing familiar around you, people, places and things! I know, I made several long moves and it did disrupt me for a while. The last move to Fla was the best move I made and it felt like home when I moved here and I was raised in cold country up north in Minn. Way different but I'm older now and I think ready for warmer weather so the move suited me.

Good luck in restoring your machines and just keep putting one foot in front of the other and things will come along that needs doing!

What i have done is wired in a few circuits for some of the bigger machines

I am also trying to better record my process as I build pieces, so a better camera and lighting are also on the burner.
I have some more pictures of the workshop in that section of lumberjocks. I would love to hear what people think. http://lumberjocks.com/JuniorJoiner/workshop

Glad to hear you've started working on projects again, as you said, the shop will get tweaked over time anyway, you'll find out what works and what you need to change as you go.
