Cherry or not to Cherry

Hi All,

I just found, what seems to me to be a treasure trove of cherry. I just stopped today at a warehouse type resale store and found that they carry all kinds of wood. Mostly redoak but alot of cherry and some maple. Anyway I just wanted to throw this question out there to see if anyone could shed some light on it. One of the piles of cherry they have is probably about 100-150 BF of 4/4 stock. Each board is approx 8' x 4". They are selling it for $4.00 a board. The cherry is absolutely beautiful, lots of color and nice figured grain, no rough cuts, all milled and sealed on the endgrain. Most of it is pretty straight stuff too. So my question is, "is this a good deal or not?"

Thanks in advance for ya'lls help,

I could tell more if I could see it, but probably a good deal. That's cheaper than we are getting it out here in the west. It needs to be straight though.

Well at 4" wide. Then three running ft = 1 Bd ft. so each board is 2 2/3 bd ft.

They are pricing it at around $1.50 a bd ft.

Check what other are charging in your area for cherry. It's probably a great price if its all select or better No knots and no sap wood. Every piece usable.

Remember that some times you need to see both sides of the board when making something. (doors) and other times only one good side is needed. Case work.

the boards are not bundled so i can cull through it to my hearts content. no sapwood that i can tell. all pretty red no knots that i could tell, at least none bigger than nickel size. mostly straight. i just looked up cherry prices from Johnson's Workbench (the only place to get cherry from around here) they are charging about 3.50 BF for unselected cherry.

yeah i about had a heart attack when i saw it and then found out what they were charging, i've got to get back there since i wasn't carrying cash and they don't take charge cards for purchases under $100. they also have quite a bit of 5/4 oak stock 48" x 4". each of those are $4 but they will prob sell for it for $3 each if i bring back cash. it really feels like i hit some sort of jackpot. thanks for the advice guys.

Figure out how many bd ft are there and then give them an offer saying you take it all. 100 bd ft would be around 40 boards. So give them a bundle price $150.00 or so and see what happens. If it's truly only 40 bds there then I'd lower my offer some to $120.00 $3.00 a board, or so.

I'd jump on that price, even per board without the horse trading.

If their selling it for $4 a board which is about $1.50 a board ft I say thats a pretty good deal. I am paying between 4.60 and 6.00 dollars a bd ft in the rough. and as high as $9.00 for S4.

BUY IT UP. FOUR BUCKS A BOARD IS A STEAL. GOOD ALL SIDES, YOU BET. CONCIDER CHERRY HERE IN KANSAS RUNS $7-9.00 A bf. MY THOUGHT IS, YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH CHERRY ON HAND.

Yeah Sarge,
i bought it some time ago and have used some of it already. some of it has a good bit of sapwood but much of it is entirely dark cherry, beautiful stuff. i'll be posting a project (my first commissioned piece actually) very soon and i'll make sure and take some pictures of some of the grain, some of it really pops out at you. unfortunately i can't afford to keep all the wood and i'm selling a lot of it to my brother for the same price i got it for. and since i bought all of it i got 128 BF for $150, ended up being a little over $1 per BF. it really was a great deal, just wish i could afford to keep all of it. oh well. that cherry over in Kansas is crazy expensive.
