Before I had a shaper and a lock miter cutter I used a stacked dado cutter to make that joint. The secret is ; just a little miter and a lot of lap. The only reason for the miter is to make a joint with no end grain showing, First set your dado at a 45 degree angle and cut the miters on both halves with the stock flat on the saw table/ What will be the inside of the joint should be flat on the saw table. Now move the dado back to 90 degrees and cut the lap joints.
