I doubt that would strain the fan motor. Think of it like a DC, closing the blast gates reduces the load because the impeller isn't moving air. But I'd bet it's still not good for the system, the compressor will be told to run by the thermostat, but there's little air to exchange the heat.I see the dust intake making the unit a little less efficient maybe but I don t think that will cause premature failure unless you never clean the filters. Leaving them plugged would place a strain on the fan motor.
