I read briefly through all the pros and cons of the different types of woods. My understanding is solid wood is the highest grade, but for pricing or other reasons the other woods are used.

Do the other woods have a grading to them. In leather working there are grades of leather, the best being full grain leather, from worst to best is bonded leather, genuine leather, top grain, full grain. Is one type of wood better than the other?

Is MDF, Particle board, plywood hardwood veneer or another woods I missed better than solid wood for a particular project (Wood movement, strength?

All of them have strengths and weaknesses and perform best in specific situations.

Also, when it comes to sheet goods of any kind, the domestic and Canadian brands from commercial suppliers are stronger, flatter and have better surfaces than the imported variety found at big box stores.

I don't have time for a complete write-up at the moment but I'm sure others will come along and keep adding to what I posted.

Hardwood is an entirely different product than MDF or particle board, and are not really comparable.
The different materials you mention are not really interchangeable, but are used in different applications.

While some projects can be made similarly using different materials, the methods of construction will often differ to accommodate the materials.

While solid lumber may be considered the best material for fine furniture, it's not always the right material for some types of furniture, for a variety of reasons.

Having said that, there are different grades of MDF, different grades of particle board, and different grades of plywood.
