Hello,

I am starting to plan the doors and and drawer faces for my kitchen and dining cabinets. I am looking for black walnut lumber suppliers to get about 350 to 400 BF of KD or good air dried lumber. It can be rough sawn. I have the machines to mill it.

Thanks, John

I don't do much "lumber" stock myself but I can send you to one of the best Walnut suppliers in the Sacramento area. I trust this person with milling my $50+ per board foot woods. I highly recommend this person from personal experience, past and ongoing dealings. Good prices for outstanding wood. Figured or just plain wood. No, it's not me… a really good mill operator and friend of mine with no personal interests. PM me if you want to look him up. I know he will have what you are looking for.

John,

I do searches on Craigslist every couple of weeks. One time I got the name of a sawyer in Woodland. He said he carries walnut, sycamore, elm, locust, oak, she oak, redwood. Frank - cel 530-383-5464. I haven't called him yet because I'm using QSWO right now.

Robert Beauchamp in Davis builds, and also harvests local wood. I've read he has wood to sell, but his website does not say that (again I have not contacted him because I'm using QSWO right now). His website is:

There is currently a list on Craigslist in Auburn:

Of course you have your normal sources:

Higgins Lumber
1301 North Market Boulevard
Sacramento, CA 95834-2941
(916) 927-2727

Hughes Hardwood
11441 Sunrise Gold Circle
Rancho Cordova, CA 95742-6511
(916) 638-8658

Aura Hardwood
2477 Mercantile Drive
Rancho Cordova, CA 95742-6218
(916) 638-7800

A new one to the area I have not tried is Rocklin Forrest Products:

I'm in Vacaville and head to Sac (Hughes) most of the time. Higgins is a large facility. You have to tell them exactly what you want, and they will bring the stack out for you to pick through. You cannot walk through their facility. I think that's a drawback. I like to walk through and see what they have. I might change my mind based on what I see. I only go there if I can't get it anywhere else. But it's not that far to bay area sites for me.

Hi John,
You are located in a good area for finding some nice Walnut. I have mostly Black Walnut Burl that has been air dried. If this is what you might use let me know and I can see what I have that would work for your project.

John,

Although clear across the country, you might at least price out your lumber needs from Chris Brittain. He has a sawmill in North Carolina (www.sawmillnc.com). His phone number is 828-994-7333. I just used him for the first time and purchased 140 bf of walnut for a project. Even with the $158 in shipping (from NC to TX), it was cheaper than the source here in San Antonio with the difference of cost/sf and adding tax (plus, the wood here uses steam, and gives a muddy look at times). He air dries it, removes most sap wood, which cuts down on waste, and has various widths and lengths. His 4/4 was a full 1/8" fatter. At any rate, He's a pleasure to work with, and in fact, he threw in an additional 20 bf of walnut in my order. Good luck, and would love to see your cabinets when finished.

There's a retired shop teacher (Warren Wise) just outside Stockton who has a lot of local walnut (he does a lot of orchard/urban tree recycling) The business is called The Woodsman, phone (209)931-3293. Neat selection of local hardwoods as well as exotics.

Its a little out of the way but Glen Holsworth, www.holsworthwoodworks.com is in Danville and has exceptional Black Walnut wide and long at great prices. I've gotten a lot from him over the years and he is more than fair.
