When I get new pipes for bar clamps and to use them in steampunk stuff I have to get the black tar like coating off called JAPAN BLACK.

I have been using Lacquer Thinning and course steel wool to scrub it off but its time consuming and what a mess.

I have trying to get it off with a wire wheel on a drill but that even worse.

Any suggestion on an easier less messy way to get this crap off
