Introduction

Hi,
My name is Vjeko. I'm a beginner woodworker. My background is in telecommunications/electronics and a load of other things. I've lived most of my life in Australia, then Germany and now I'm back in Croatia (my country of birth).

I've always felt I've been missing some creativity in my life with hectic work, pressure etc. and have wanted to express myself in a creative way via woodworking. Unfortunately, until now either I haven't had time , space or tools.

Now I'm between jobs and as we have a couple of apartments which need builtins, beds and tables before being rented out, I thought of using the opportunity to get tools, learn woodworking and save some money at the same time. Well, I'm under pressure again (interesting how pressure follows me) , so hope I can cope and succeed in these projects with the little woodwork experience and help from lumberjocks. Once I've completed these projects, I hope to do something more artistic and without pressure ;).

Hi Vjeko, My nephew and his family live in Croatia. He's from the states but she's from there. I've never been but I've seen pictures and video and especially when they stay at her parents place on the Mediterranian. It is a gorgeous, quaint, historically rich place.

So, what types of woods are used there?

Hi Zuki, Daniel and Steve !
Thanks for the welcome - sounds like a bunch of helpful people - looking forward to joining in.
At the moment I'm in a tough spot - need to do a lot of woodwork (builtins, tables and beds) without experience, so I'll be bugging everyone a lot - hopefully I can pickup enough to get on my two feet ASAP.
I still need to sort out my workshop, get a few more tools, so, I'm under pressure - not a situation I like but it's a good excuse and opportunity to get stuck into woodworking and maybe save some money / make some quality items.

Daniel, I live on the coast (100m from the beach) 25km south of Zadar in a little town called Sv. Filip i Jakov (Saint Philip and Jakob), right next to Biograd. In the neighbourhood we have 3 national parks one of which is an archipelago of islands. With time, I'll post some pictures.

Steve, you're right - LJ's has a lot to offer for the woodworker - I have a feeling , with such helpful people, with time I'll learn a lot and speed up in the projects.

Daniel, forgot to answer about the types of wood used around here.
As a beginner, I'm not very well acquainted with all the details yet but know
there are local woods like birch, oak, alder, larch, ash and beech (and others), and european, siberian, asian, african, american woods like cherry, acacia, pear, chestnut, ulmo, ipe, jatoba, palisander, spruce, wallnut, bubinga, ebony, sapeli
etc. etc. Now I just need to get into action and get my workshop/tools in order.

BTW, forgot to ask, what line of work is your nephew in here in Croatia ?

Well, most of those woods are foreign to me here in Maine. We have a limited number of common cold weather woods. soft like the conifer family and some harder beech, alder, maple, oak. The rest are pretty much considered exotics.

My Nephew has a degree in Physical Education and works for a school mostly in basketball which I guess is big over there. He travels around with a team which usually gets to do a tour of schools and plays them in the states once a year. His wife is a math teacher. Smart lady, Croatian, speaks half a dozen languages without an accent and a few more with one. It was a big move for him to move outside of the states but he likes it a lot and she has family there.
