Nice video; good job. That's one heck of a shop you've got!

I do have a question. I've always seen the four square process start with jointing a flat face, then jointing an edge square to that flat face, then rip the opposite edge square and parallel, then plane to thickness (last two steps can be reversed.) With your process of starting with two parallel edges, what guarantees the edges are square to the faces? It's hard to see the edge as a large enough surface to reference off of to get the face square.

Great video, but I do agree with jmos that a face should be jointed first, though this may not be a big problem if your faces are pretty flat and not warped to begin with.

Nice shop, with lots of toys. Always enjoy seeing others work spaces.

I think it's funny that people with the Festool tools tend to rattle off the part numbers when describing the use of the tools. Most people will say, "I take the router and cut…" But the Festool owner will say, "I take the Festool OF 1400 EQ router with the 486058 edge guide and cut…" It just always makes me laugh. BTW, I have a couple of Festool tools and love'em too, so I'm not doing any bashing here. It's just an interesting quirk that I've noticed with the Festool users.

Keep the videos coming.

BTW, since you have a jointer and all the pieces were cross-cut to short lengths, seems to me that you could have skipped the step with the tracksaw.

  1. Cross-cut the pieces
  2. joint one edge of each board
  3. rip to width on the saw
  4. continue as you demonstrated

Whenever possible I try and do all my machining with the smallest stock that I can get away with. So I always rough cross-cut my stock before moving on to any other operations.

Thank you Marty!
Yes that is so funny about the festool numbers!!!
The Wood was real bad on the edges to where it made it so much faster to track saw one side it saved many passes on the jointer like more than like 6-8 times. Yes that is normally the way I do it also! Thank you for the comment.

Thank you jmos!
The edges were really bad on most of them, so I just ripped them all as I was set up….Some of the boards had more than an inch and half weighing on them…. It was allot of fun!
