I have never turned but have been considering buying a lathe. I have been attempting with very mixed success making rings for my family and have thought this might be far easier if i bit the bullet.Jet JWL-1221SP Step Pulley Wood Lathe $317. Free Shipping with Prime. My local Woodcraft (Plano, TX) sent me an email for a manager special on the same lathe for $349. Should be a good starter lathe for someone, especially if you are mostly interested in turning pens or other basic spindle turning, if you are going to do a lot of turning a variable speed lathe would be a better option.

Thanks Rich and sorry about that. I did quote the wrong one. Hopefully fixed now. That is some good info i appreciate it. I have some additional questions but maybe I will create a different post for those. Not sure the proper etiquette but I don't want to overly flood peoples inboxes with questions that are not pertinent to deals.I m assuming you quoted the wrong post and are talking about the lathe. I would highly recommending mounting the lathe to a sold station. When I have my Nova Comet ii, I mounted it to a cabinet I made with drawers to store blanks and tools and chucks and accessories in. I also mounted my sharpening station to it and then built a false base on the cabinet that I put about 75lbs of sand in to reduce vibration and to add more mass.

Is this a good starting unit?
Do people simply put this on a table and use or do they build a stand?
Any other info would be great as it seems like a decent price.
