Hello everyone, Im new to the site and new to carving. I carve bowls by hand without a lathe. I have run into a little trouble. Im finishing a Macassar ebony bowl and was going to use Watco butcher block oil on it so it would be food safe. Man this wood just soaks that stuff up. Its like there is no finish at all on. I left it sitting there unfinished for one day and it started checking. I had some spray on lacquer close at hand and gave it a lite coat. This stopped the checking but now its not food safe. Could I sand a little and put the Butcher Block oil on top of the lacquer and make it more food friendly? I am as "GREEN" as they come and I appreciate any and all help.
