Folks, I am getting "shutter" while removing mill marks from the edge of soft maple boards. This doesn't happen every time. The hand plane in question is a Stanley Sweetheart #4. I honed the iron with a Veritas Mark II and I also honed a micro bevel. I can shave the hair on my arm with the iron after I get done honing so I don't think it's the sharpness of the blade. I am taking very thin bites and I've got the throat closed way down. Any ideas?

Make certain that your cap iron is contacting the blade all the way across the width of the blade, at the front of the cap iron. When tuning a handplane the condition and fit of the cap iron is as critical as the sharpness of the blade. I usually locate my cap irons about 1/32 back from the edge of the blade. Also cap iron must be rather snug, but not over-tightened. Another thing is when you are setting the blade exposure always do it in the ADVANCING direction. Adjusting in the RETREATING direction will cause chatter (shutter).

In this plane the frog is part of the casting and the cap iron is 1/32" back from the edge and it is snug. I think my issues are mouth not open enough, wrong planning direction and planning after adjusting the blade exposure in the retreat direction. You folks are AWESOME!! thanks.
