I've been looking at buying the "General International 10-210" 3hp dust collector. I was thinking of removing the "Y" splitter and one collector bag w/filter. Basically, I want a "10-105" style 1.5hp dust collector, with a bigger 3hp motor. My question is, will doing this give me an airflow and static pressure increase (above the standard 2280 CFM and 15 9/16 SP for the 10-210) ? Are there any disadvantages to doing this other than the obvious not using 1/2 of the hardware.

I want to put the dust collector into a small 14' x 21' shop, I don't want to roll it around so it will be permanently mounted to a wall/cabinet with a Thien separator. The space I have allotted for this will only allow for a 10-105 type setup. I don't plan on any duct work, just one +/- 20' flexible hose going to which ever machine I'm using at the time.

I know this may seem foolish to some - I've been trying to read threads on the math for this sort of thing but find myself quite confused … so please don't be too harsh with your replies.

You will have a reduction in airflow if you remove one of the filter/bag assemblies. From the factory the unit moves 2280 CFM through 2 filter assemblies. If you were to remove half of the filter area then you will see a reduction in airflow.

Yep, air flow depends on less restriction on the outflow side as well as the inflow side. Removing the Y (I'm guessing this makes the inlet 6" instead of 4"?) will increase the air flow with 6" duct, not sure what the net effect will be; almost certainly it will decrease the total. Doesn't really matter, if you intend to connect it to the tools with a flex duct that in itself will reduce air flow. It would better if that flex was 6"...4" is probably going to be way short of your desires. The CFM ratings on these units are generally overstated, often the real world number is about 1/2 what the claimed amount is. To be honest, if that flex hose is 4", you may as well go with the smaller DC.

Fred and joey are spot on.

The only suggestion I would add is direct venting, but if you're climate controlled its not an option in a shop this small.

Motor size, filter area and intake diameter are closely related to each other and changing one of those factors won't give benefits unless the others are adjusted to suit the changes.

In other words, sticking a 3HP motor on a 1 1/2HP setup won't increase airflow very much. Removing filter area from a 3HP setup will decrease cfm.

Hack away, experiment, then experiment again, toss the calcs, use 'feel',,, way quicker than agonizing about it!

Spare plastic parts are not that expensive anyways, they can most times be duplicated with off the shelf items either with gorilla tape to build up the difference, or plastic sanded off to get the OEM parts to fit.

Then it is back to the real task at hand …Woodworking!

I forgot to mention I was planning on replacing the bag with the 10-106HF 0.3 micron canister. From what I gathered, I thought the surface area of one canister was greater than two bags … negating the issues of removing 1/2 of the hardware.

I didn't plan on using the 4" ports, just one 6". I knew the longer flex hose would reduce my air flow, hence my wanting to get a bigger motor to compensate.

I've thought of just venting everything outside to save space, but, the desired exhaust hole/only option would only be approximately 8' from a natural gas fireplace vent. I wouldn't want wood dust floating around that vent should the wind decide to blow that way.

If you don't vent DO replace the bags with the filter. I wasn't too impressed by the fact that the bags were 2 micron anyway. As for air flow, it's a good bet that the filter will breathe better than the bags, but not a given. Quality bags are rated by the CFM just as many other thing (AFF can tell you what the CFM per sq. ft. of their fabric is, for example). Still worth doing. The other thing: if the distance to the fireplace vent is 8', you have nothing to worry about venting the DC out, it would save you some serious bucks, and really max the air flow on the exhaust end. That was an important point about the filter, be sure to get a large one….check the media footage, not the physical size of the filter. I have a cyclone with a 14 1/4" impeller, and the filter I bought (PSI) for it shows basically no pressure at the outlet (1/4" of water).
