My shop is my "happy place". I don't get nearly enough time in it, but when I do, it allows me to be calm, and enjoy the experience.

Lately, I've begun talking to my shop - is that weird? Not running conversations mind you, just a "Hello, Shop", or "Good Morning, Shop" when I go in.

Anyone else 'talk shop'?

Sometimes the wood talks to me. A few years ago I was trying to turn a difficult piece of redwood burl. The wood said, "Give up, you're not good enough to turn me." I set the wood aside for over 2 years. Then, after improving my turning skills I put the wood back on the lathe. This time the wood said, "That's better" and it yielded a very nice bowl with a natural edge.

More seriously, I often put a piece of wood on the lathe with only a general idea about what I want to do. As I proceed, the wood seems to lead my into a particular shape.

Just kidding around I think it's great you express joy when entering your shop.

Jim Your shop says, "Buy more Routers, buy more Routers". It's got you right where it wants you. Soon there will be a invasion of Routers across the Great Northwest and it will be your fault!

I talk to my car so I don't see anything wrong with talking to your shop.

Do you addresss the shop as a he/she? Does it have a name?

My car is Betsy but I don't have a name for shop. Not sure if it should be feminine like boats and cars or if should be something manly since its full of tools? Muscle cars are full of power but still can have feminine names so not too sure Lol.

It already gets very noisy in there with all those routers talking at the same time, but my wood is much quieter
knowing at anytime it's going under the knife (aka saw blade)

My woods shows me what it wants me to do as I'm turning, the grains appear and I see a pattern that might have to be reversed/flipped and the piece never comes out as I originally planned. NEVER! I also find myself humming in the shop so it must be communication of some sort between me the shop and the woods. I love where my shop is at, underneath the spreading branches of a huge Live Oak tree. I'll be posting my shop soon and will include a shot of the trees all in a row for over a block between the 2 streets.

My shop is my mistress, of course I talk to her and she talks back as well. She tells me when to clean her all the time. She also hums and makes all kinds of wonderful sounds, unfortunately my wife talks to me as well without all the wonderful sounds. So don't let your wife catch you talking to her. LOL.

Last year I bought an old wooden machinist toolbox with tools. I found that a man had burnt his name into the bottom underneath side of the bottom drawer in 1918. Whenever I use 1 of those tools out of that box, I say thanks to Johann. I have heard myself asking Johann for advice at times.

Every time I ride my motorcycle, I always do the same thing when I get where I'm going. I lovingly pat the gas tank, and say "thanks, Fred, good job"

If I start talking to my shop, I need to get help.

I sing to my wood shop. It likes that old Beach Boy tune called, "In My Woodshop."

Goes like…There's a place where I can go and tell my troubles to…In my wood shop, In my woodshop. And so on.

If you know "In My Room" you know how it goes.

you know, I dont actually talk to my shop (I do my bike tho!! well i did!) but when the time comes on certain projects something says that you have had enough for today and well really you should give up -just for now and take a breather. (subtle hint- you are NOT concentrating enough) If I listen all is well, if not,... well the outcome is usually not good.
So i have learnt from projects past, that when I hear that time is up or something is not going the way I want. I put it down and go and have a cuppa, or shut up shop completely -depending on the time of day. Even if I am right in the middle of it or 'that' close to finishing off a project I will put it down. I dont want to ruin it by being tired.
