Furnishing a Sauna Suite

Overall Plan

"Finnish" the Basement with a Sauna

We designed and had our home built in 2014. We anticipated finishing about 500 square feet of the basement eventually, so we had the basement plumbing roughed in during the initial build. I began finishing the basement, as a DIY project, about a year ago. In our part of the county, we only needed an electrical permit.

The focal area is the sauna. It's a very useful 5' x 7' size with heat-efficient 7' ceilings, a heavy glass entry door, electric stove with digital controls, and western red cedar used throughout.

Excellent Sauna Resource

I found "The Art of Sauna Building" to be an excellent book that was extremely helpful in designing and building a custom sauna. The author emphasized the importance of creating a very relaxing atmosphere. I planned the project with the overarching theme of a "sauna suite."

Furnishing a Sauna Suite

This blog will focus on building the cedar benches and accessories for the sauna, changing room benches, changing room table, and a vanity base for the toilet room. Everything in the sauna hot room is built from western red cedar. Everything else in the sauna suite will be built from ash. (I obtained a lot of ash free from my Dad's friend in Wisconsin!)

Capturing a Shelf Inside Tapered Legs

Lots of Other Projects

I set the sauna furniture aside to work on other projects. I built a similar table to this with a drawer for my step daughter as a wedding present, configured my wife's new fishing kayak, and made some modifications to the fishing configuration for my Wood Duck Double kayak I built last year. With those projects completed, I'm in the home stretch of completing the sauna suite furniture.

Cutting Shelf Mortises

I've made four of these tables and placing a shelf within the tapered legs provides both strength and utility.

This shelf holds the fan that cools us off in the changing/shower room after a sauna. This photo shows me experimenting with a height that looks good and is functional. I settled on 10" from the floor to the top of the shelf.

Notice the relationship between the taper on the leg and the mortise that receives the shelf.

I used a mortising machine to cut the mortises.

The mortises are cut from both sides. The material between the mortise and the inside edge is removed by the taper cut.

Building a Tapering Jig

It's worth building a simple jig to make the 8 tapered cuts required for a set of 4 legs.

Table Wood Desk Tool Workbench

Draw out the taper on a piece of 1/4" plywood and screw 3/4" wood cleats to hold the leg in position for the rip cut on the table saw. This is an incredibly accurate way to cut a tapered leg.

NOTE: Be sure to visualize which face of the leg to taper first. I lay it out so that when the first face is tapered, the subsequent face is towards the bottom. This allows me to rotate that face clockwise for the next taper cut and I've always got a flat surface against the bottom of the jig and the positioning cleat. This one is worth pondering before you make each cut…

Cleaning Up the Mortises

I used a sharp chisel to clean up the mortises. The mortising machine leaves some material to remove since it's a round drill bit operating within a sharp, square housing. This doesn't take much work to clean up if your chisel is sharp.

The legs look a lot better with a taper. There was too much bulk for the size of the table prior to the taper.

This photo shows the final location for the table. My Dad turned the bowl from spalted maple. All that remains is to produce top cleats, sand to 120, glue it together, , peg the tenons, clean the glue squeeze-out, sand to 220, and varnish.

Vanity Base - Post and Frame Construction

Approach

This is the last piece of furniture to complete furnishing the sauna suite.

Wood Bathroom Rectangle Sink Interior design

The vanity base starts out quite similar to the changing room benches or the table from previous blog entries. It features rails fastened to legs via mortise and tenon joints.

To make it a cabinet, panels are added between the frame pieces. This is a lower rail and shows a 3/8" deep groove for the side panel on the top and a 1/4" deep groove for the bottom of the cabinet in the side of the rail. I routed the top groove with the same 5/16" spiral upcut bit that I used for the mortises.

This is the top rail. The groove on the face is for a cleat to provide more glue surface area for the silicone to hold the marble vanity to the base. The other groove is for the top of the side panel.

This is a front leg, with mortises on the side, that holds the cabinet doors. The grooved portion is to hold the side panel. NOTE: I routed the hinge mortises before assembly.

Assembly Sequence

I assemble the side panels first.

Start with the front leg and a pair of rails.

Add the plywood side panel. NOTE: I used 1/2" plywood and dadoed it to fit the 5/16" groove. I placed the dadoed side into the cabinet for the side panels.

Add the back leg.

Add the 3/4" plywood floor, the back rails, and back plywood panel.

Add the other side assembly. Clamp the entire cabinet at the same time to ensure everything lines up before the glue sets. I used polyurethane construction adhesive because of its longer set time. (I don't like foaming Gorilla glue.)

I'm glad that I've invested in a bunch of Bessey K-Body clamps over the years!

Similar Construction to Frame

The door construction is quite similar to the frame. I routed mortise and tenon joints and added a groove for the plywood panel.

I used flush hinges and set them in shallow mortises.

Ugly, but effective.

Done

I installed the top and finished the plumbing this weekend.

It's hard to take good pictures once a vanity is installed in a small room. You get the idea though. I'm happy with how it turned out.

Conclusion

Building our own furniture for the sauna suite was a good decision. I like the look of the ash in the areas outside the hot room. The furnishings are custom and reflect our style preferences. The basement finishing project is done!

Thanks! It's a big day since this was the last step of my DIY finishing of 500 sq. ft. of our basement.
