The Rules

I would like to start a friendly competition based on the works of Frank Lloyd Wright. The rules are pretty basic and I have tried to make them so that anyone can enter no matter what your woodworking style is.

1) The piece must be based on a work or works of Frank Lloyd Wright.

2) The piece must be a box or vessel. Basically it must be able to hold something inside it.

3) Any woodwork technique can be used as long as it fits in with the other rules.

4) Any materials can be used as long at least 50% of the piece is made of wood. Plastics, metals, glass,
whatever you can image and work into the piece.

5) All pieces must be posted on September 1, 2012. When you post your piece name it FLW and you name/handle.

6) Who ever gets the most views and the most comments wins.

7) Must be a new piece made for this contest. We will use the honor system here.
8) Prize…...................Bragging rights. LOL

My purpose for this contest is not to see who is the best at this or that, it is to see what kind of creative ideas we can come up with from a common idea.

I chose September 1st because the summer is a busy time and I wanted everybody who wanted to participate to have time to design and build their piece for the contest.
JoeyG, Define box or vessel. A cabinet could be considered a box and a vase turned out on a lathe could be considered a vessel….. Correct???

That's correct boxcar. I don't think there needs to be a size limit. A house is just a big box, so if you can build a FLW style house over the summer that would be cool. And by vessel I did mean something turned. I just figured by having to be able to put something in it adds to the challenge. It's up to the artist what that something is.

I don't need another house, but the dog might if he doesn't change his ways….. Hmmm, I'll have to ponder that one…..

Joey, I'm trying but after looking at 25 pages of FLW stuff on Google last night, I still don't have any ideas yet.

Neither am I Christine, that's why it will be a challenge. Andy, if you FLW doesn't inspire you, then just wait until fall. I should have called this a challenge instead of a contest, anyway, I already have idea's for a Fall Challenge. If this works out I think these little challenges will be a fun way to work "together" in a way.

The dog house sounds like a cool idea. I wish I had thought of that.

No need to sign up or anything, just post it on September 1st , just start the name of the project with FLW so we all know which ones they are. Not that there should be any question as to the projects influenced by him. LOL

I think the Falling Water could be transferred to a box. Just not sure I have time enough to figure it out.

You still have 2 1/2 months Monte, plenty of time. I do know how you feel though. This was my idea and I am starting to wonder if I will have time to complete it.

Good luck Monte, I hope you have time to do something.

How's your FLW project coming along?

For those who didn't know about it or catch my first blog post about this, I figured we could have a fun little Frank Lloyd Wright inspired build off. The rules and time frame are all covered in the first blog in this series. The more the merrier. I hope to get a lot of people to enter. I think it will be cool to see what we all come up with.

I must admit that I have not gotten much farther that checking out a couple of books online. I did finally decide on a house that I think will work with a lovely box I have been commissioned to build. I am going to attempt to use carry FLW line design into my box. I believe the way he has his windows laid out will work well with the type of inlays I have been doing lately. I figured I would share the picture of the house I chose as my inspiration. I chose The Williams Adams House built in Chicago IL in 1900-01 and I think it's for sale. Wouldn't that be cool.

Well here is a pic of the FLW house I have picked as my inspiration. That's all I'm giving you until time to post completed projects. Anyone else who wants to play along, feel free to post a picture of your inspiration.

That's about all I've had time for myself Monte. I have a commission that will have a lot of straight line inlay work to it and as I was looking threw the FLW book, I realized this house had similar lines to my sketch. So I modified my work to be influenced a little more by the Adams house. Now I get to mark off two things from the to do list with one project.

I didn't finish.

I am ashamed to say that I didn't finish my FLW box. I am close, but will not be finished for another week or two. Did anyone else get to do anything for this little inspired competition? When I first thought of this, I figured I had given myself plenty of time and then real life happened. While I had a great summer with my kids, I didn't get nearly the amount of shop time I thought I would.

I apologize to you all. I still plan to post my project once it is done.

I hope you understand.

Thanks.

Joey
