The Rules

I would like to start a friendly competition based on the works of Frank Lloyd Wright. The rules are pretty basic and I have tried to make them so that anyone can enter no matter what your woodworking style is.

1) The piece must be based on a work or works of Frank Lloyd Wright.

2) The piece must be a box or vessel. Basically it must be able to hold something inside it.

3) Any woodwork technique can be used as long as it fits in with the other rules.

4) Any materials can be used as long at least 50% of the piece is made of wood. Plastics, metals, glass,
whatever you can image and work into the piece.

5) All pieces must be posted on September 1, 2012. When you post your piece name it FLW and you name/handle.

6) Who ever gets the most views and the most comments wins.

7) Must be a new piece made for this contest. We will use the honor system here.
8) Prize…...................Bragging rights. LOL

My purpose for this contest is not to see who is the best at this or that, it is to see what kind of creative ideas we can come up with from a common idea.

I chose September 1st because the summer is a busy time and I wanted everybody who wanted to participate to have time to design and build their piece for the contest.

I like that! Someone complained once about the competitions. I suggested we just consider them themed galleries. -onaccounta what you said…it IS really cool seeing the variety of different types of work and all the creativity and fine workmanship that arise from a single prompt!

Sounds good to me. I don't really care what we call it. I just think it will be fun to see the different creations from the same source material.

I am competitive by nature. My problem is skill. Me competing with the top 10 box makers on this site is like my mom fighting Manny Pacquiou.

However, I must say it's a challenge and I've done dumber things (this is very provable). A challenge it is!

Hi Monte, Look at it more as an exercise in ideas. It's not the skill level I am looking for. It's a reason for a lot of different people to be inspired and interpret a central idea. In this case the work of FLW.

LOL Grizz. I think the new grout mixer I got for my drill is gonna be my tool on this one. But that's okay, because my wife is happy and that's all that really matters.

I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Great contest idea, however I am away from my shop for awhile and will not be able to participate. Look forward to seeing all the cool projects!

Welcome aboard Liz. After looking at your projects I am sure you will create something incredible.

Rob, I am sorry to hear that you have to be away from your shop. I would be very grumpy without my sawdust meditation everyday. You have all summer if you get back in there early.

For those who don't like competition, if you look around life you will see that we compete at things throughout every day. From jobs to driving and so on. If you're not interested don't pay attention.

I'm all in and have penciled the date on my calender. The ideas are starting to flow!

I think this "competition" will get everyone who enters to try something new in materials, techniques or skills used! Great idea Joey.

I grew up in Midland, Michigan which was the home of Frank Lloyd Wright's protege, Alden Dow. I've been able to spend a lot of time inside several of Dow's houses, and one of Wright's in Midland too. Very unique. I may have to enter this contest…

It wasn't really my idea Jim. I thought that Dennis and Roberts little competition was a great idea, and then I thought it would be a great way to see how folks interpret the same base information. Seemed like fun.

Early in my career (1988) I had the opportunity to work on a remodel project of the FLW Adelman House in Phoenix. It is a Usonian Automatic, affectionately nicknamed "The Bunker" for its low slung look.

The Taliesan West had to approve everything. After we completed the structure, I built the entire household of furniture for it in the garage using original FLW blueprints. Kitchen Cabinets, Coffee Tables, Dining Table and Chairs, end tables, room partitions, built-in sofas, wall units-everything. The entire project took 13 months.

Do I still get to enter?

Of coarse you can DS251. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Just remember it has to be something you start now, non of those things you built in the past and it must be a box or vessel.

I cannot not wait to see what you come up with.

Grizz, if it's any consolation, I don't remember any boxes, or vessels among the original prints… So I can't just pop out a FLW copy of anything. It will have to just draw on the inspiration of the designs he used.

I will enjoy the challenge tho'.
