Happy to lend moral support, Jeff. I'm only about 3 years into turning myself and still have a lot to learn. Bowl gouges are tricky and catches still happen to me. The most important tips I can suggest are to frequently resharpen or hone the tool, and always rub the bevel. Keep experimenting until you get a feel for it, and don't let mistakes get you down. We all make them (which is why I have a HUGE supply of firewood!) and you just keep trying.
