Tried making my first live-edge bowl yesterday from some elm. It's a fully green turning, and already warped into more of an oval overnight. Finished with tried and true varnish oil.

It smelled a little musky but not too bad. I'm not sure if it's Chinese or American elm… I thought it was Chinese but the bark doesn't look right.

Really nice. Perhaps red elm? It gets that nice dark heartwood I think.

You've done an excellent job, first try or not! I love the live edge, your design and the great finish. Just an overall great turning! The problem with this type of turning is, once you have done a few, it becomes difficult to go back to turning a plain, round bowl. You have experienced this new challenge and you'll find anything less to be just a little boring. At least, that's how it went for me. Congratulations on a job well done!

Thanks for the comments. I made this for a charity auction at work and it ended up "selling" for $475 amazingly. I've since made a few more, both out of this elm and out of some pine.
