Nice upgrade. I hear very good things about them. I built my own that is very similar, but I put the fence rail on the flat instead of the edge. I love the lower profile that way, and how often do you need a taller fence anyway? The rare times I do I bolt on a piece to the fence. Can these fences be installed on the flat too?

Yes, all six channels are the same it would be easy to rotate it.

I added the VSCT fence to replace my problematic Biesmeyer a year ago, great upgrade!

The expensive part is the actual fence extrusion. VSCTs remachines their extrusions to be dead flat, but you can order the same extrusions on eBay for a lot less, alas they rarely are truly straight. I have seen two examples of 4 foot lengths, one has a "bend" of about 0.060" over the length, the other was about 0.010" off.

You can get the hold down hardware on Amazon for less then from VSTCs.

What might be the search terms for the hardware and extrusion? I can have one milled flat easily enough at the machine shop.

The hold-downs they suggest are from JessEm, they show a lower price at VSC Tools now than on Amazon.

I used these

Currently out of stock, but there were many other vendors at the time. I had to file off a few burrs on some of them to make them slide better but overall they did the trick.

There are two choices of bolt size (I went with the M6), but I feel the smaller size would be plenty adequate and easier to fit with accessories.

The extrusion can be found "everywhere" online, A quick eBay search shows this 1 meter long section (look for a longer piece, the VSCT part is 48" for their long option).

The parts are called out by their dimension (metric) such as 4080 (40mm W x 80mm height). The "series 40" dictates the thickness.

I have the same 1216 lathe, and it's a great tool.
Mine has the optional leg set with mobility kit, and that is solid too.

hey since youve got that fancy new lathe why dont you check out the bowl turning swap thats starting after the first of the year.lots of fun with a great bunch of guys.you dont have to be a expert turner and you dont have to turn a bowl,it can be anything on a lathe,or hell doesn't even need to be done on a lathe,you can carve it by hand if ya want.check it out.

My Christmas gift to myself showed up in the mail today. double ended gouge 1/2" spindle with bowl on the other end.
