The copper vein is copper powder added to two part clear epoxy.
You can use any "powder" you'd like….
brass….
turquoise….
silver….
coffee grounds….
Let your imagination run wild!!!

As I don't use hand planes (yet)....
I can't really answer that question, but I don't see why not. I wouldn't neccesarily use a "high end" (read: expensive) plane, but a run of the mill one should be fine. I've just used sandpaper to smooth epoxy filled knot holes. Others may chime in with a better answer.
