Well my Drill Press of twenty years has died I gave it a formal funeral yeaterday when the trash men came my one big item a month its gone. So i went to look for a new one i stoped at Lowes and saw a Porter Cable one dont like it at all I think it is lite and not sure if I would have it for another twenty years. The table is for metal working not at alll what I want. What has happened to the Delta Tools that lowesd used to carry.

So again i went to another lowes just to waste time while my wife was shoping. and there it was a
Delta 17-950L the one with the nice table for wood working 90 degree titl both ways. well I asked is they had a boxed one because the floor model was in parts they looked and no it wsa the last one. I told ther man after looking at all the parts and seeing that they where all there I will buy the floor model for $75.00 because itas in pieces and I would have to asemble it He was not to happy with my offer but called the manager and was told if I would pay $100.00 for it it was mine long story short I have a new drill press and its great for $100.00 I love it. My wife and the groceries where not to happy no room for all the bags after my press was in but we got every thing home and we a re all happy.

just thought i would relay this stroy.

Has Lowes contract with Delta run out or is Delta changeing?

Thanks guys have a grerat day.

Sorry to hear of the Passing.

Sounds to me like you got an excellent deal on the Delta!
All I was able to get was 10% Off for Floor Models.

Nice Score !!!

I was looking at the same drill press at Lowes a couple of weeks ago. They had two out, both pretty sorry looking, "marked down" to $340 I think. I wasn't interested, so didn't attempt to make a deal - wish I did now.

Enjoy!

I was at the brand new Lowes (our first and only) the other day and they too did not have any Delta tools. Lots of Porter's and the guy told me they were not going to carry a lot of the Hitachi tools either (some were clearanced priced (you might want to check out if looking)? I do not buy tools from Lowe's or any of the other box stores (but I always look) unless it is an emergency and I need a small tool quick. Being in business and having accounts enables me to make better deals (we buy alot of things in bulk also)...although your $100.00 deal would be nigh impossible to match or beat. Good luck on your new acquisition….It should last a goodly amount of time….I would not expect the 20years though as I am not so optimistic about these lesser quality controls and engineering used now by Delta due to the pressure to reduce prices and the use of untrained low price overseas (not to condemn any particular country) labor.

From my perspective, it looks like Lowes is dropping the Delta brand and embracing the Porter-Cable brand. It's kind of silly since both brands are owned by the same company.

Nonetheless, I got a good (not great) deal on a Delta floor mounted drill press that was a discontinued product. It looks like you got a great deal on a Delta drill press. Congratulations!

On my most recent trip to Lowes I saw lots of Porter Cable products I had never seen before and not a single Delta product. I'm sure this makes sense to someone - just not me.

A drill press is such a simple machine I am wondering how it "died"? In my 50 years of using a drill press I can't think of a way of breaking one.

I own the Delta 17-950L and I absolutely love it. You got one hell of a deal. I do tend to agree with Planeman though regarding his inquiry of How did it die? They really are simple machines. I guess the bottom line is at the price you paid, it wasent worth fixin the old one unless it was USA built Old Iron. If it was, I would have been tempted to throw a DC Variable speed motor on it. I hope you kept the chuck, if it was a good one. The one that comes with the Delta is pretty good but it aint a ROHM

I have to second planeman, how did the drill press die? I can't think of a 20 year old drill press that wouldn't be better quality than most bought today, makes me wonder what was so wrong with it that it was not worth repairing?
