I was going to build a disc sander out of an old circular saw universal motor (12 amp) but I need to have a atleast a 10" inch disc spin on it because i need to use it for surface sanding boards. So my question is would it possible to build a surface drum sander using a motor like that? I don't want to buy an induction motor.

Never thought of recycling a circular saw into a sander, but then I used them till they died. I don't think a disc is what you want to do surface sanding with unless their just small pieces. A drum sander might work if you can find a collar to attach the two together. Don't see why it would be any different than attaching one to a drill.
