I want to build a dining room table that is 66" long by 43" wide. I have a sheet of very nice 3/4 cherry plywood which I want to edge with solid cherry. I have a lot of cherry so being stingy with material is not necessary. I am just trying to figure out proportions. I want to have breadboard ends so I will not need to be cutting 45's. Does three inches wide all the way around sound like too much?

Breadboard ends were originally used to stabilize the board ends across the short sides of the table top, before the days of plywood. Since you're using plywood, you're probably just using the breadboard ends to give it a traditional look.

If I'm understanding this right, my thought about a wide banding along the long sides is that it will compete with the breadboard ends. I would make much thinner strips to band the long sides, which will celebrate the breadboard ends proportionally. This would also allow you to make the long side bands thicker to give the table the appearance of being a slab, instead of the real 23/64" of your plywood.

You'll probably need to draw or mock up the 3" breadboard ends with the 66" x 43" top. My table is 62" x 38" and the breadboard ends are 3-3/4". I think it looks fine.

Perhaps these images (one based on your dimensions and one based on the captian's) might help you visualize the tabletop. I would also agree with Unionlabel regarding doing a mockup.

I usually make my breadboard ends protrude from the sides to allow for wood movement. This adds to the classic look too, although there's certainly nothing wrong with making them flush Shaker-style. Depends on the look. Since you're using plywood, it's an aesthetic decision only.
