We are excited to announce that we are live on our new forum platform!

It’s been a long time coming. Let’s face it. Sometimes older forum technology lags behind other parts of the internet. Although seeing the same format for a long time is comforting, the member experience shouldn’t include dealing with outdated, unsafe, slow software.

The transition to a new platform will never be 100% smooth but the days of dealing with out of date forum software are over. We have teams dedicated to building a world-class community for you. The development has been steady with regular software releases since May 2019. Asking members for feedback and coming up with ideas for improvement is what we want.

Speed and Reliability Are Key
No one should have to wait for information. This site has been built to be much faster and more reliable, period.

New Homepage Experience
Our algorithm will serve a personal customized feed based on your prior engagement with content on the site. If you’ve liked and or commented, or are following certain topics that are of interest to you, similar content will appear at the top of the homepage.

Search
We have introduced new search algorithms, powered by an industry-leading AI platform, to help you find information faster. We plan to roll out new features to continue improving search, and to power many additional areas of the forum.

Due to the volume of content, our search platform may take some time to complete indexing over the first few days after migrating. During this process, you may see a limited number of posts until indexing has been completed. We appreciate your patience.

Finding Your Way Around
We have made the design clean and simple to use. Near the upper right-hand corner of the community, you will see navigation icons.

The first icon is for what’s new on the site.

Clicking on it, by default, will take you to new unread posts. On that page, you can click on additional tabs as well, such as Popular, if you prefer to view active topics.

Clicking the list icon next to “NEW” will bring you to the full forum listing.

Clicking your avatar will give you a drop-down menu for all things related to your account.

You can also navigate more by clicking the 3 vertical dots.

Dark Mode
We have introduced Dark Mode. One of our favorite features allows you to access the site with a power-saving, and easier on the eyes dark mode. You can access it in the drop-down menu under the 3 vertical dots.

Save Bookmarks
Now you can save your favorite discussion threads and posts! Bookmarks are a handy way to remember and easily find great content or stuff you want to read later.

We also wanted to make it easier for new users to understand the lingo of forums. We have cleaned up various language to more commonly recognized phrases including:
  • Following - Thread subscriptions, and Watched are now known as Following
  • Conversations - Private Messages or PMs are now conversations and can be accessed from the user avatar drop-down in the main navigation
  • Showcase - Showcase is designed for users to "showcase" items/projects through the use of uploaded images, text descriptions and custom content categories. It’s a way to visually and textually provide detailed information on the content you wish to share. The showcase would be similar to a catalog, whereas the gallery would be like a photo album. It can be accessed from the drop-down menu with the 3 dots.
Take a tour and look around! Check out the Help section for some quick FAQs about the new platform.

Please keep all feedback, questions, concerns, requests for help, etc. regarding the new platform right here in this Feedback thread. This will help us make sure not to miss a request for help and also let us pass along your thoughts to our Product team. The Admins and I will be here to help along the way taking note of your comments.

Another bug from the previous post

I tried to describe my search location as
Font Magenta Pattern Rectangle Number

But the system displayed it as
Nose Smile Eyelash Jaw Ear

One would think that characters in a continuous string would not be parsed out as emoticons

One problem is that you cannot even bookmark a projects or journals (the new blogs) on the new system -- just forum postings. Unless they enable that feature, you will have to store your project bookmarks in your browser or some other method.
A browser based list falls far short of the saved projects.

No thumbnail of the project makes it very difficult to find what one is looking for.

Not sure what "some other method would be".

I had such a long list that there is no way I'll ever be able to recreate it.
Tips For Showcase Search

To search the Showcase (including Journals, Projects, and Workshops) you need to use Advanced Search by clicking the Kebab menu (three vertical dots) in the upper right corner and then selecting Advanced Search from the drop-down menu.

Click on Search Showcase.

OR, you can also access this directly by clicking the Search Showcase shortcut within the Welcome To LumberJocks category.

From Advanced Search, enter the keyword or title you are looking for. Click on the Prefix and Search Category options. Click Search at the bottom.
Cricket - is this post in response to my error report yesterday? (post #1085 - having trouble making multiple quotes work this morning)

If so - it misses the point. I did exactly what is described above - including using "" for exact match. The search did not perform an exact match search but tried to match individual words.

If not - could I get an update on post #1085?

Thank you!
It is not that peachy. I can see only my first fav.projects. The rest are not available...
Basically you can use this link: https://web.archive.org/web/20210306175433/https://www.lumberjocks.com/?????/favorites/projects and replace ????? with your user name on the old forum....
May be there are other links, but this one gave me only first page of my favorite projects...
I had bookmarked few form it.

But Cap.Klutz is 100% right...
This worked (kind of) for me. Last saved image was from 2015.

Even so, I have 62 pages of links I need to sort through and move to a browser favorites folder. Probably 10-20 hours of work (I think).

That assumes that I can actually access all 62 pages...

UPDATE:

I spent a half hour and put 4 pages of favorites into my browser favorites.

Turns out I only have 1 more page to do. The wayback machine have favorites pages 1-4 and 62. Pages 5-61 are not available. :(

UPDATE #2:

Just spending 45 minutes looking at my old favorites reminded me how incredibly disappointing this loss is

Seriously - how hard is it to get a higher resolution thumbnail for the project pages?

I have no interest sharing content that is going to be presented with a grainy thumbnail.

It's called a SHOWCASE - why not show off the content?????

To demonstrate that you can, try this advanced search:
Select Search Showcase, enter ? in the text and select Projects. You will get a grid with slightly larger thumbnails.

Apparently this is so difficult to implement for the main Project pages that is hasn't been done.
Search results for 3 character words appear to be resolved. :)
Hmmm,

I repeated my Showcase Advanced Search in Projects and got the following message:

The following words were not included in your search because they are too short, too long, or too common: box

The Search Phrase was "bandsaw box" (quotes included)

Additionally, it would be nice if the Advanced Search had the option to search Titles Only
I just did a search for bandsaw box, without the quotes, from the search block at the top of the page, to the right of the Lumberjocks logo. I got 486 results.

You can search for titles only in advanced search. At least I was able to. I've seen it where everything doesn't work for everybody.
Thanks for pointing out the Search Title box - it was staring right at me! :)

I repeated my search for "bandsaw box" using titles only:
  1. I still got the message that the word "box" was omitted
  2. I got 500 results but:
    1. Very few were bandsaw boxes - only 1 out of 4 on the first page
    2. Several of the results did not have "bandsaw" or "box" in the title
    3. Several of the results had "box" in the title without "bandsaw" - even though the message says the word was omitted
2
Can you try again now, please?
Glad to help.

Here is my search setup

Rectangle Font Parallel Screenshot Number

Here are the results

Font Screenshot Door Pattern Landscape

There error message is gone - that's a good thing.

However the search is returning projects that do not have either of the words "bandsaw" or "box", much less the phrase "bandsaw box".

Only 4 projects of the first 20 have "bandsaw box" in the title.

Thanks for working on this.

You can use a word processor like MS Word or Google Docs or MS Notes. Save it to your desktop or in the cloud (and bookmark it) for easy access. Just paste a link into the document and if you want a picture, right click on one of the thumbnails or full sized images in the project, select copy image from the popup box and paste that into the document as well.
As much as I dislike this option (way more work than simply clicking "Favorite") I can't think of a better way.

Ideally I would set this up as pages of images and titles with urls attached to the titles.

For me the best thing about favorites was scanning through images and finding things you didn't even realize you were looking for - stuff you forgot you saved. Url's and titles don't enable this (for me).

It has been suggested that blog series structure could be restored by creating a Table of Contents and chapter links within the blog itself.

I have attempted to do this with my Yearbook Blog - you can see what I did. I'm pretty pleased with the resulting format.

I was able to get the structure updated in the first 10 chapters but then was blocked from going any further (only 10 edits allowed every 7 days).

The process took about 40 minutes but now I have to wait a week before I can finish the work.

What is the purpose of the10 edits per 7 day limit?

It adds another level of effort when trying to repair a blog.

Also, any work on the old blogs is hidden from view. I doubt anyone would even know I did this work if I hadn't posted about it here.

Is it possible to get blog activity added to new content?

Anyone else noticed that the cover images for the member projects seem kind of low res and "dull"?
The cover image size seems to be 150x113 pixels.
I resized my original cover image to the same size. Below you can see the difference in a screenshot I made.
Left= image in projects page, right = my own resized image (zoom level 100%)
View attachment 3858901
The zoom level in my browser (Chrome) is set to 100% but somehow the image on the project page seems blurred and low quality even though it is displayed as larger (maybe that's the problem?).
It would be nice if this could be fixed since I think a lot of people make some effort to create nice images of their projects but then the cover image will not make the project stand out and does not reveal enough detail which in turn does not attract clicks which I suppose is the whole meaning with the project page.
When I brought this up a week or so ago I was informed that it was a known bug. Must be harder to fix than what I would guess it to be.

Something is seriously wrong with advanced search. I enter this:

Font Material property Rectangle Parallel Screenshot

and I get this

Product Font Screenshot Adaptation Urban design

Best guess is this should be more like 4,000 not 4 - not very useful at all.

Same as you northwoodsman

Mike D - I don't see filters anywhere - did you mean prefixes?

If prefixes cause the problem - what the heck is a prefix and when would I use it?
Done. When I search showcase and leave prefix set to "any" I get 500 results. Same as northwoodsman.
That still seems low out of 150,000 projects only 500 have the word "chair" in the title? Could be but 0.33% or 1 out of 300 seems low. Maybe - maybe not...

Also, what is a prefix?
For the search you were performing, the prefixes of Journal, Workshop, or Projects would only search those specific areas for your related search. By leaving it empty, it should search for all that are listed in the showcase.

~Mike D
Hmm, since I only wanted to see projects I'm not sure why selecting a prefix of "Projects" lost all the matches.
This earlier comment echos what I just posted... sorry. However, it can't be that we two are the only ones that are unhappy about this?
There are lots of unhappy people regarding this. Unfortunately we have all but given up any expectation of improvement for project posts. The only response has been "We're looking onto it"

The smaller images listed on the project home page are sample (smaller) sizes of the actual images, but when clicking on each project, the larger image is included. :)

~Mike D
Not only smaller - also blurry. And unreasonably small.
The purpose of a project preview is to understand the project well enough to see if it is one of interest. Clicking on a project should be to understand in depth - not to figure out what the project is.
