We are excited to announce that we are live on our new forum platform!

It’s been a long time coming. Let’s face it. Sometimes older forum technology lags behind other parts of the internet. Although seeing the same format for a long time is comforting, the member experience shouldn’t include dealing with outdated, unsafe, slow software.

The transition to a new platform will never be 100% smooth but the days of dealing with out of date forum software are over. We have teams dedicated to building a world-class community for you. The development has been steady with regular software releases since May 2019. Asking members for feedback and coming up with ideas for improvement is what we want.

Speed and Reliability Are Key
No one should have to wait for information. This site has been built to be much faster and more reliable, period.

New Homepage Experience
Our algorithm will serve a personal customized feed based on your prior engagement with content on the site. If you’ve liked and or commented, or are following certain topics that are of interest to you, similar content will appear at the top of the homepage.

Search
We have introduced new search algorithms, powered by an industry-leading AI platform, to help you find information faster. We plan to roll out new features to continue improving search, and to power many additional areas of the forum.

Due to the volume of content, our search platform may take some time to complete indexing over the first few days after migrating. During this process, you may see a limited number of posts until indexing has been completed. We appreciate your patience.

Finding Your Way Around
We have made the design clean and simple to use. Near the upper right-hand corner of the community, you will see navigation icons.

The first icon is for what’s new on the site.

Clicking on it, by default, will take you to new unread posts. On that page, you can click on additional tabs as well, such as Popular, if you prefer to view active topics.

Clicking the list icon next to “NEW” will bring you to the full forum listing.

Clicking your avatar will give you a drop-down menu for all things related to your account.

You can also navigate more by clicking the 3 vertical dots.

Dark Mode
We have introduced Dark Mode. One of our favorite features allows you to access the site with a power-saving, and easier on the eyes dark mode. You can access it in the drop-down menu under the 3 vertical dots.

Save Bookmarks
Now you can save your favorite discussion threads and posts! Bookmarks are a handy way to remember and easily find great content or stuff you want to read later.

We also wanted to make it easier for new users to understand the lingo of forums. We have cleaned up various language to more commonly recognized phrases including:
  • Following - Thread subscriptions, and Watched are now known as Following
  • Conversations - Private Messages or PMs are now conversations and can be accessed from the user avatar drop-down in the main navigation
  • Showcase - Showcase is designed for users to "showcase" items/projects through the use of uploaded images, text descriptions and custom content categories. It’s a way to visually and textually provide detailed information on the content you wish to share. The showcase would be similar to a catalog, whereas the gallery would be like a photo album. It can be accessed from the drop-down menu with the 3 dots.
Take a tour and look around! Check out the Help section for some quick FAQs about the new platform.

Please keep all feedback, questions, concerns, requests for help, etc. regarding the new platform right here in this Feedback thread. This will help us make sure not to miss a request for help and also let us pass along your thoughts to our Product team. The Admins and I will be here to help along the way taking note of your comments.

I'm confused - what's the difference between the Journal and the Projects in Process forum?
There a form to fill out in the Journal but when it comes to reading them I can find little difference.
The content in both seems identical so far.
Shouldn't the Blog thread be titled Blog Archive?
Might help reduce some of the confusion.
Right now we have
  • Journals
  • Projects in Progress
  • Blogs
as places to record project builds.

yes leaving here will not solve anything, there all the same now ! no one wants to spend the money to create a unique forum so they buy whats off the shelf and try and cram it in and make it work ! it's all about making money from ad revenue or membership fees 😞
I keep telling myself "when all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail"
It's a way for me to rationalize why all this has happened 🙂

Whack yourself twice (just in case you miss the first time) on the thumb... and you'll change your view on nails.
Been there done that LBD - that's why I prefer screws
I have a To Do list spreadsheet that has several links to LJ projects (they still work). Those links had the project number as part of the url. Those numbers were in the 427,000+ range. I've checked and can find projects all the way back to number 5. The new project page has 8333 pages with 20 projects per page or 166,660 projects. Where did the other 260,000+ projects go?

Or am I missing something?
Bumping this question
Again, how do I make a new post to this forum? All I can do is reply to another post.

Again, how? I CANNOT post a new thread to this forum, I can only reply to someone else's.

Most, not all of the Forums have a place, near the top, "Create a Quick Thread"

This forum does not.
Cricket can correct me if I'm off, but
  1. This topic is a single thread, not a forum. That's why there is no option to start a new entry at the top.
  2. There are 2 ways to add to this thread
    1. Click on the balloon labeled "Reply" in the bottom left corner of any existing comment. I did that to your comment. It puts the comment contents at the top of the new content.
    2. Enter text into the box just below the last comment where it says "Write your reply"

The method number count may have changed. No projects have been deleted except for a few empty test ones.
Thanks Cricket. I guess I didn't understand the old project numbers as well as I thought I did!
Hey Cricket - here's an easy one🙂
I was scrolling through the In Memoriam area and noticed a statement at the bottom

You have insufficient privileges to post here

I am content with my status. I was confused by the statement. It seems a clearer message might be
  • You must be a premium member to post here
  • You must be a moderator to post here
Or whatever would be the correct requirement.
Not a huge issue but would make the message clearer
You can reply to any thread there, but you may not start a thread in that section.

Are you able to reply?
Yes I can reply. My suggestion was only about the wording of the message in the hope of improving clarity
The messaging with not be updated. However, I did add the information to 2 locations.

And also here.
That should take care of it!
Thanks Cricket!🦗

The Gallery and Albums are not the same things.

Your Gallery can contain Albums that contain photos for organization purposes.

Given this description above, it might be a good idea to update the text in the FAQ topic What is the Difference Between the Showcase and Gallery.

Current text ends with:

Showcase would be similar to a catalog, whereas gallery would be like a photo album.

It seems a better description would be:

Showcase would be similar to a catalog, whereas a gallery would be a collection of albums that contain photos for organization purposes.
I made a suggestion last week but I can't recall or find a reply to it.

  • Would it be possible to allow the creator of a journal to start a new page when adding new content?

It would go a long way to restoring the readability of a journal.

The current Journal structure is vertical with new pages added only when the current page gets too long. A reader must scroll and hunt for a journal update - a challenge if there are lots of comments.

Allowing the ability to create a page break would enable the reader to find new content by simply moving to the next page.

We are working on cleaning up the old blogs.

Members can choose multiple parts for the Journal feature. The series option is available. They can also edit the original to make a mini-glossary when they have all the parts.
I am confused as to how the Journal series works.

I have been following RossL's journal series but from what I can tell there is no connection the the chapters in series other than a series name. If I were reading #1 in a series is there a way to get to the next chapter other than to do a search? RossL's series happens to have each chapter posted with few entries from other posters in between. Some journals have several weeks (or more) between chapters.

I am assuming that the answer to my question is that page breaks will not be offered.

So - BlueRidgeDog just created Part #3 of his blog Nightstands

I tried to find Parts 1 & 2

A Journal search failed - Parts 1 & 2 are in Blogs

I could not find a search function to find "Nightstands" in Blogs

If I go to BlueRidgeDog's profile all his content is on display EXCEPT for Blog entries

When I opened up the Blogs archive I could find Nightstands Part 2 on the first page.

It looks like my only chance to find an old blog is to manually scroll through page after page until I see it

Will we be able to Search through the Blog archive in the future?

I would suggest to add links to the other entries, linking them all together.
I'm planning on doing this on an older blog that I'll update soon.

It will be interesting to how much time it takes to put that together.

I'll keep track and report on it later this month.
Following them, it makes it easier to use the filters.

Hi Cricket,

I tried to find a way to get notification of a new project or journal from someone I'm following by using the Showcase Tips link you provided. Since the post was a reply to duckmilk I thought I could find a way.

I couldn't see how to make that happen. I thought maybe there would be a way to follow a person's showcase.

Is there a way to get a notification when someone posts a new project or journal? If not, what was I supposed to learn from the Tips link?

Just trying to understand.

Thanks
Follow the member who created the projects or journals.

For now, we don't get alerts when a member starts a new project (any showcase categories). If you comment on the project you will get alerts (depending on your settings) with other comments.

You can use New Showcase within NEW for now to see all new Showcase categories until we find solutions..

Got it - Thanks Cricket
I can’t seem to find where the favourite projects are located?
thanks Steve
They are gone

No plans to recover (yet - hopefully)
Search issue:

Trying to find examples of "bandsaw box" in Showcase-Projects

Used advanced search in the showcase - selected projects and put "bandsaw box" (with quotes) in the search line.

I would expect the search would return items with the phrase "bandsaw box"

The search results start with a message to the effect that the word "box" was excluded because it is too common.

Didn't I specify a phrase search for "bandsaw box"? Why did the search split the phrase?

The search results returned 2-3 bandsaw boxes per page of results. Not what I expected.
