We are excited to announce that we are live on our new forum platform!

It’s been a long time coming. Let’s face it. Sometimes older forum technology lags behind other parts of the internet. Although seeing the same format for a long time is comforting, the member experience shouldn’t include dealing with outdated, unsafe, slow software.

The transition to a new platform will never be 100% smooth but the days of dealing with out of date forum software are over. We have teams dedicated to building a world-class community for you. The development has been steady with regular software releases since May 2019. Asking members for feedback and coming up with ideas for improvement is what we want.

Speed and Reliability Are Key
No one should have to wait for information. This site has been built to be much faster and more reliable, period.

New Homepage Experience
Our algorithm will serve a personal customized feed based on your prior engagement with content on the site. If you’ve liked and or commented, or are following certain topics that are of interest to you, similar content will appear at the top of the homepage.

Search
We have introduced new search algorithms, powered by an industry-leading AI platform, to help you find information faster. We plan to roll out new features to continue improving search, and to power many additional areas of the forum.

Due to the volume of content, our search platform may take some time to complete indexing over the first few days after migrating. During this process, you may see a limited number of posts until indexing has been completed. We appreciate your patience.

Finding Your Way Around
We have made the design clean and simple to use. Near the upper right-hand corner of the community, you will see navigation icons.

The first icon is for what’s new on the site.

Clicking on it, by default, will take you to new unread posts. On that page, you can click on additional tabs as well, such as Popular, if you prefer to view active topics.

Clicking the list icon next to “NEW” will bring you to the full forum listing.

Clicking your avatar will give you a drop-down menu for all things related to your account.

You can also navigate more by clicking the 3 vertical dots.

Dark Mode
We have introduced Dark Mode. One of our favorite features allows you to access the site with a power-saving, and easier on the eyes dark mode. You can access it in the drop-down menu under the 3 vertical dots.

Save Bookmarks
Now you can save your favorite discussion threads and posts! Bookmarks are a handy way to remember and easily find great content or stuff you want to read later.

We also wanted to make it easier for new users to understand the lingo of forums. We have cleaned up various language to more commonly recognized phrases including:
  • Following - Thread subscriptions, and Watched are now known as Following
  • Conversations - Private Messages or PMs are now conversations and can be accessed from the user avatar drop-down in the main navigation
  • Showcase - Showcase is designed for users to "showcase" items/projects through the use of uploaded images, text descriptions and custom content categories. It’s a way to visually and textually provide detailed information on the content you wish to share. The showcase would be similar to a catalog, whereas the gallery would be like a photo album. It can be accessed from the drop-down menu with the 3 dots.
Take a tour and look around! Check out the Help section for some quick FAQs about the new platform.

Please keep all feedback, questions, concerns, requests for help, etc. regarding the new platform right here in this Feedback thread. This will help us make sure not to miss a request for help and also let us pass along your thoughts to our Product team. The Admins and I will be here to help along the way taking note of your comments.

(Not sure this is the right thread for this)

Simple question: what happened to the “roll the dice” feature? One of my favorites. Was it simply removed or it still lurks somewhere?
I show 589 conversations marked as unread (after the conversion). The process of marking them all read appears not to work.

Process: show list of conversations. check one box to select. Then a popup comes offering to select all and choose what to do with selection. Choosing select all and "mark as read" options ticks all the boxes for selection. With the "mark as read" option selected, then save, the screen closes with no errors noted.

Yet the refreshed alert screen shows 589 messages unread. Am I missing something?
DanK
Had an "all unread" issue with conversations after conversion too.
When you select all, how many does it show are selected?
What i found was could only select the conversations shown on the page, which was 35 for me. Was PITA to change one page at a time.
But I found I was able to visit each page, select all and keep going; then "mark all as read" on last page, to make them all read.

It looks like my favorited projects and blogs are all in one list called bookmarks. Is there a way to look at bookmarked projects, blogs, or discussion threads separately?
After a closer look it appears that there are no projects in my bookmarked list.

Did all of my favorited projects go away?
We were not able to bring the old blogs over in the same manner they were previously available, but we wanted to retain the content.

We are working through some possible solutions moving forward.
I looked for a way to start a new blog - it's not an option in the "NEW" menu.

It looks like blogs are essentially inactive for now - is that right?
Only favorites for non-projects were converted to bookmarks for some reason so yes your favorite projects are lost. Blogs are now just another type of forum topic and posted in the "Blog" forum.

We did some experimenting with multi-chapter (series) blogs and you can see one way to do it here:

Hi Cricket, thank you for this big update.

I did not explore everything yet, but once accustomed I suppose I will find it is a nice upgrade.
As some have mentioned here already I find that the project page/top 3 was making the forum different.

I did notice something though: In the past the country on the left column, under the name was populated with the country from the status (I guess).
It seems it now takes the country from the IP adress (I guess) and from my point of view it is the typical idea that IT people fantasies, but is not such an amazing idea from the end user's seat.

As I am french, I always liked my country to be mentioned on the left, in order to explain/excuse my bad english when I post here.
But I am often in other countries (like now with the "Burgish" flag) so the flag will not always reflect my country and what is populated under my profile. I don't think this country being populated by the place the connection is made is a true good idea, but I might be wrong ;-)

ADDENDUM: I realised the flag is now Luxembourg because I am posting from this country today, but when I mouse hover over the flag, the infotext shows France as populated under my status.

Thanks anyway for all the other new features!

Hey, Cap. Thank you for your suggestion. I've tried every combination I can think of. One at a time, five at a time, page at a time and the site blinks after clicking "GO" and it behaves like it did it. Check the count, check first message, all the same even after page refresh. "select all" selects 35. yes, pretty tedious to get to 589 that way. The motor is running but there's no power to the road.

I've got the same issue. Just as you say.

I'm hoping it's a bug in the new software that gets fixed. Nothing I've tried works.
Possible BUG:
viewed a good looking project.
Went back to the hyperlink of poster’s name and selected Showcase, which showed some number of Showcases.
However, when Showcase resolves, it says user “has not added any media yet”
BUT, if you go to the user’s main page, and select Showcase there, it shows their various projects.

I guess I'm slow. Getting frustrated. Another Woodworking Forum site has this same style format. I stopped using that woodworking forum site because I had trouble figuring out the navigation of the site. Maybe I'm old school. I style type the "One finger bandit" method (hunt and peck).

Tell use what you cannot find. In the meantime, this can all be done with one finger on the mouse or mobile screen
  • Projects short cut on the bar near the top of most pages
  • To find new forum topics, projects, media galleries, etc., click the new button upper right
    • Use the tabs to go to various areas (Showcases are the old Projects)
    • Click the filter drop down to expand or restrict what you want
  • Click your avatar upper right for updating your profile or site settings
    • You will also see Alerts for updates to any topics you are following
    • Conversations are the old private messages from the old site.
    • The Following option shows a list of the topics you are following similar to the old pulse if set to show only things you are following.
  • The 3 vertical dots are basically links to various areas on the site
    • Check out the FAQ for tips and tricks

I was able to do them all at once with this sequence:
  • Click the checkbox on one message
  • when the box at the bottom pops up, click select all
    • The count should increase to all of them from the page
  • Go to the next page (upper right)
    • Select one and then select all -- the count should now include all from both pages
  • Repeat for all pages
  • When all are selected, select "mark conversations read" from the choose action drop down box.
  • Click Go next to the action box.
You should obviously be able to do them one page at a time. If you set the filter (upper left) to unread conversations, that will make it easier to see which ones still need to be marked as read.

When viewing Showcase, why are the category and filter mutually exclusive? For example, if I want to find Peteybadboy's workshop, I cannot first select the Workshop category and then enter Peteybadboy in the created by field. When I do, it resets the category to all.

EDIT to add: If I manually add the search term (?creator_id=107527) to the URL that results when I select the Workshops categories, it gives me the desired results:

This time it worked. I was doing that and it appeared to be working, but the conversations still showed up red in my account details. Thanks!!

There are two situations I’m aware of where it “won’t work.”

One is of the database behind the new Lumberjocks is busy. It’ll work eventually, but it may take a while. So if you check again “too soon” you’ll still see stuff unread.

The other is that if you have “too many” messages (somewhere over 500), it will only do some fraction of them. I found I had to mark all my old conversations read in two batches, because it brought over all of my sent messages, which I had never cleaned up before the site transition.
Something has changed because now it will mark conversations as read. Selecting all is a PIB, but with enough repetitions (manual selections) it gets done.

Mmm, don't really like the new presentation of blogs. The old one was structured though some issues. The new platform seems to have forgot the overview of blog or project. Before you can step left or right for the series in a blog. Now it’s totally different! I lost one blog entry when you were changing. I have two more to write, but not sure I will continue!
The new layout is a mixed bag for me.

The Positive
  • I like that you can actually post projects by adding photos, videos, and links without having to go to a 3rd party code embedder to generate HTML.
  • Seeing full size images is really nice
  • expanding text boxes are very nice
  • really anything about posts, replies, comments, quotes, etc. is a breath of fresh air

Negative
  • I miss the look of an actual home page. I can't tell where things are or what is going on by the current main page layout. I get that it is really just a "forum" architecture, but it was nice seeing different sections that called attention to projects by showing a small gallery. This format isn't inviting. It actually makes me turn away from wanting to see what people are doing.
  • The review section is now impossible to browse by most recent since it is all now under a category. I liked seeing when someone posted something new about an item that I might not have known about. Now you can't do that. It would be nice to have the option to have a main landing page for reviews that showed the top XX newest and then directs you to the more specific section if the user wants to go that direction.

Questions
  • Is there a way to change the project section from a list into a gallery like it used to be? Thumbnails on a 25" display is way to small compared to the text size. The text size looks good by the way.
  • Will there be featured projects again or is that gone forever?

How do I post a new review? Do I just raise a new blog "Article (Long form content)" and choose my tags carefully to see where it slots into any particular Review Forum list?
Is there a rating system or do we need to manually add it. Not that it's a biggie, but I'd rather hold off if there is more development planed for "Review" type posts.
I'd rather not waste time if a new "tool/gizmo" that many may not be aware off, will stay that way.

Not sure if I read it right, however, I think if you read a new blog and don't mark it, it may be "lost" and then youe have to go and search (for the "what was that thing/topic again").
