Community Feedback: New Forum Software Is Live!

61529 Views 1592 Replies 155 Participants Last post by  BobHall
We are excited to announce that we are live on our new forum platform!

It’s been a long time coming. Let’s face it. Sometimes older forum technology lags behind other parts of the internet. Although seeing the same format for a long time is comforting, the member experience shouldn’t include dealing with outdated, unsafe, slow software.

The transition to a new platform will never be 100% smooth but the days of dealing with out of date forum software are over. We have teams dedicated to building a world-class community for you. The development has been steady with regular software releases since May 2019. Asking members for feedback and coming up with ideas for improvement is what we want.

Speed and Reliability Are Key
No one should have to wait for information. This site has been built to be much faster and more reliable, period.

New Homepage Experience
Our algorithm will serve a personal customized feed based on your prior engagement with content on the site. If you’ve liked and or commented, or are following certain topics that are of interest to you, similar content will appear at the top of the homepage.

Search
We have introduced new search algorithms, powered by an industry-leading AI platform, to help you find information faster. We plan to roll out new features to continue improving search, and to power many additional areas of the forum.

Due to the volume of content, our search platform may take some time to complete indexing over the first few days after migrating. During this process, you may see a limited number of posts until indexing has been completed. We appreciate your patience.

Finding Your Way Around
We have made the design clean and simple to use. Near the upper right-hand corner of the community, you will see navigation icons.

The first icon is for what’s new on the site.

Clicking on it, by default, will take you to new unread posts. On that page, you can click on additional tabs as well, such as Popular, if you prefer to view active topics.

Clicking the list icon next to “NEW” will bring you to the full forum listing.

Clicking your avatar will give you a drop-down menu for all things related to your account.

You can also navigate more by clicking the 3 vertical dots.

Dark Mode
We have introduced Dark Mode. One of our favorite features allows you to access the site with a power-saving, and easier on the eyes dark mode. You can access it in the drop-down menu under the 3 vertical dots.

Save Bookmarks
Now you can save your favorite discussion threads and posts! Bookmarks are a handy way to remember and easily find great content or stuff you want to read later.

We also wanted to make it easier for new users to understand the lingo of forums. We have cleaned up various language to more commonly recognized phrases including:
  • Following - Thread subscriptions, and Watched are now known as Following
  • Conversations - Private Messages or PMs are now conversations and can be accessed from the user avatar drop-down in the main navigation
  • Showcase - Showcase is designed for users to "showcase" items/projects through the use of uploaded images, text descriptions and custom content categories. It’s a way to visually and textually provide detailed information on the content you wish to share. The showcase would be similar to a catalog, whereas the gallery would be like a photo album. It can be accessed from the drop-down menu with the 3 dots.
Take a tour and look around! Check out the Help section for some quick FAQs about the new platform.

Please keep all feedback, questions, concerns, requests for help, etc. regarding the new platform right here in this Feedback thread. This will help us make sure not to miss a request for help and also let us pass along your thoughts to our Product team. The Admins and I will be here to help along the way taking note of your comments.

Is there a way to not have viewing tracked? I've tried to reset my privacy settings but it appears to not change the display. Thank you.
Is there a way to jump to the post you have yet to read for a project or post, or is it just from the start or the last post?
Something I have seen, is an area to the right at the top of the project post being read, showing about 4 or 5 projects that you can click on to go to the next project.
I access on my phone so maybe I'm not seeing it for the projects. Does seem to work on the forum discussions.
I access from my phone and it is very slow - not sure if the speed would be better on my laptop? One odd thing- I have to click on the "post reply" twice to get my comment to post on a project. And, as I've seen some others comment, having the project pictures on the list page larger would be great.
barb dont give up on us,dont forget about (dogs and cats) and (green thumbs) threads.were dyin ! posting all over is way down.i think many have given up and left or cut way back !!!!! 😩
Looks like comments on projects are way down. Hope the experienced members don't leave- I have been helped by so many over the years, no matter how simple my questions might be.

Since change over my speeds here have been much slower than before the change. Over the weekend I was reminded of the old dial up days. I kept listening for the modem to start tweeting, slowwwwwwwwwww doesn't cover it. I too am on Win 10, 1.4gb proc, with 32 gig of ram, on a super fast line, with a VPN that usually triples my speed across the web, yet here it's so very slow. No where else am I experiencing this.

But the cell phone users are probably all doing fine. ;)
I use my phone...and it has been slow for me as well.
Nope. It’s been slow. It was fast this morning, though, and isn’t too bad at the moment.
I was just going to jump back to say it seems better now than it was. Time will tell...
Site is a little slow right now. That last post probably took 30 seconds to complete.
Mine is very slow too...accessing on my phone
Sorry if this has been covered or I missed it in the FAQ, but is there a spot for "buddies" to listed? Or is that no longer a feature?
Over the past few weeks, the projects section seems to have much less "traffic" - at least in terms of comments. Behind the scenes, are views similar to what there has been in the past? How could we increase visibility and interaction? I view on my phone and the initial screen has small pictures and the more space for the description. I would suggest switching that ratio as the visual is more of a draw. Just some random thoughts for an early Monday. Have a great week LJ

I may be missing something here but don't you just click on Projects to see the recent projects?

Yes. My post is related to formatting on the page as a potential reason interactions are down. I always enjoyed the variety of comments and questions on the various posts. Since in the new format it seems this give and take is down.

It's not broken. ;)
I've read the FAQ and still don't understand what the difference is between showcase and gallery. 🤔
I hope members who were active will remain. As a person on the uphill learning side of woodworking, I enjoy looking at projects and reading the "how to" of the design and construction. It seems like the projects are not as "active" - not sure why or how we as a group can shift focus to that area of the site. I've commented on this before, so this will be my last post on the topic...

It should be from us, but I will check why it says ADVRider.

I don't like to click on any links in emails. Is there a way to turn this off from my profile settings?
I am older then dirt i am just curious if any 1 else is having trouble with the new forum i think i have learned something then cant find it again just shout out ME 2 if your having problems 🥺 🥺 🥺 🥺 🥺
I access on my phone. For me, I go to the "new" symbol and then go to projects from there. Does that help?
Sorry if I've missed this...but is there a way to see if new comments have been added to a project, or when I re-open a project (to look at comments as these are interesting to see Q&A) to be taken to the comments that are new since my last viewing? Right now I have to scroll back through the post and all comments. If it matters, I'm accessing on my phone. Thank you.
@BB1, do you know if you’re following the project(s) in question? If you are, you will receive alerts when members leave comments or likes. In the case of a comment, you can click the alert to be taken directly to it.

The reason I asked is that I noticed that this site doesn’t automatic make you follow new content you post. You have to do it manually. I assume this behavior is a bug that will be fixed eventually.
Not sure I really want individual alerts for each interaction on posts. Was hoping there was a way to "jump back" to my last interaction with the project.

Seems like I have seen a button at the top of the post which will take you to the latest. Not sure if that will take you to where you left off or not.
I don't see it on projects, just the discussion threads.
It becomes a bit circular as I don't feel motivated to write a long description if few (or none) comment or interact. Part of the enjoyment is the discussion that follows a post. Without the interaction, the drive to add a project is definitely diminished for me (which makes me sad!).
