Chisels sharping

Hi,

Based on the recommendation that I received from this wonderful community I got myself a set of Narax chisels. Looks like they are sharp when arrived, I also purchased a honing guide so I can sharp them in the future. I never sharpened any chisel and when I looked at honing guide it says there are 2 type of chisel I can sharpen using it. One is Paring Chisels and Mortise Chisels. I do not know the main difference and I do not know if the Narax chisels is Paring or Mortise chisels.
This is what I bought
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Z55BB8A?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09BPSRHWP?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
Can someone tell me which one I got?
Because the put the chisel in the honing guide is different based on what type it is.
Also, I need to buy a good set of stones to sharpen this and any recommendation will be helpful.
Thanks

Those are regular bench chisels.
These are mortise chisels: https://www.amazon.com/Chisel-Mortise-Set-4-pcs-Narex/dp/B00TU1PL54
Narex bench chisels are ground to a 25° bevel.

John, good to know that the Narex Chisels are at 25 deg. I purchased a set without the handles myself, through Taylor Tools.

You have many choices of sharpening media - oil, water, or dry stones, diamond plates, wet or dry sandpaper. Choose one and expect to spend some time learning how to do it. Then you move to honing compounds. You can make an entire career out of sharpening chisels.

- David
A vintage plane iron will be ground to some number between 25 and 35 degrees, depending on how many users it had before you and how they honed it.

My advice: Sharpie the bevel and take passes on a stone (or sandpaper) at different angles and then you'll find out exactly what angle it's at. Then you can choose to "round up" to a setting on your guide or freehand it however you like.

David, they have angle finder here== on amazon. Pretty handy to have. Sharpening can be a very personal and sometimes divisive choice. I have tried many and settled on Work Sharp for chisels. I like speed at which I can batch sharpen a full set quickly. For plane irons I like to freehand on diamond plates. Its quick and clean. I used to work with a dull tool because it was such a time suck to get it back to sharp. Once I sped it up I often stop and freshen a tool up while working. A strop is pretty handy too.

The angle is 25 on Narex mortise chisels.

There is a very good chance you don't need mortise chisels though - you can cut mortises with your bench chisels just fine.

He does so I gave it a try but in the end I prefer using the mortise chisel. For larger wider mortises I will probably go to my bench chisels. I don't see the need to obtain a full set of mortise chisels.

I bought a couple of mortise chisels on Craigslist a couple of years ago. Definitely not necessary if you want to keep your quiver lean. The benefits are that you can wail away on them a little harder (or at least I do), and they stay straighter in the mortise with less effort.

I struggled with sharpening for a long time until I found an awesome video (I'll look for the link and post when I find it) . The video showed using a sharpening guide with a roller and a hard surface with sheets of different grit sand paper. I have to tell you, my chisles have never been sharper. I used a 3/8" thick piece of acrylic plexiglas that is about 8" x 14" and a range o f sandpaper from 80 grit to 3000 grit. I use the technique of pulling the chisel instead of pushing and it only took me 10-15 minutes to get a horribly disfigured chisel to look new again.

I used stones for a long time and now use sandpaper exclusively because of the pain of resurfacing the stones plus having to use water with the stones. I know there are a lot of folks that are die-hard honing stone users but for me this produced a much better edge in a lot less time. One of the hardets parts was making a measurement template to use with the guide. I just made a mark on my workbench to get the precise amount of chisel sticking out of the guide for the correct honing bevel but I made the mark in permanent ink so it will be there when I need it.

I did also find these articles which were helpful
