I am curious to know how to get these sunk in looks in the chairs I have seen in many of the stools that I have been looking at lately.

here is a couple of examples

I have tried to search this forum, but I am not familiar with the the search that searches the whole internet as well as this site.

Thanks

I'm guessing that you mean the carved out saddle seat …

And, as you might guess, you carve it out. Old school style, you would use gouges and a scorp. New school, you might use a router and/or a power carving tool like the arbortech and/or a holey galahad.

If you want to try using a router, R. j. DeCristoforo built a swinging router system and shows how to build it in one of his books. As his work was from 1940 to the 1990, so his books are not recent and might be difficult to find.

The swinging router he designed, and built, could dish out almost anything from a chair seat to a bowl so it had more than a single purpose!
