Casters, Swivel or Fixed

For my radial arm saw which I seldom move I have a pair of fixed casters mounted on the rear of the cabinet. I have to tilt the cabinet for the casters to contact the floor, It has worked well for me over the years.

For a kitchen island project I am slowly working on I chose fixed casters for two reasons. First, they stay in their plane making them easy to conceal and second, they are more stable than swivels. I mounted them parallel to the front and back of the island so that they don't move while someone is using the work surface. If I need to move the island other than in a straight line I can easily lift either end slightly and guide it into place on the other two casters.

I was having coffee with a master builder in his kitchen and told him what I was doing. He smiled and got up and moved what I thought was a built in place island about the size of mine. So I guess great minds work alike.

I didn't add the question mark. I thought it might help someone else decide. Most of the mobile islands I see have swivel casters and I just wanted to draw attention to the option. YMMV
