Crucifixion

It's been a while since I've posted a blog on the steps of a project. This one is on a full life size 6'-0" Jesus with a 12'-0" cross which is one of three life size sculptures I will be carving for a new Retreat here in the Midwest, which I have 18 months to complete.

The pictures show some drawing and clay steps at half scale, then I can move to wood at full scale. This has been a big challenge for me studying human anatomy, which is not very easy for this simple woodworker.

The customer approved the drawing which took me a full month of drawing and now I'm working out the details in clay for approval and to help me see it in 3D, then I can transfer to full scale for the wood glue-up.

I should be done with the clay model by the end of the month. I'm starting on the hands tomorrow which will probably take about a week or less I hope.

Well, Thanks for looking and happy woodworking!!!

Huge challenge Dennis but they picked the right man for the job. You will prevail ….. I know it.
Excellent work so far for someone who is just learning human anatomical carving.

Dennis - you always amaze me with your talent, this is an awesome project for you and you are just the guy to pull it off. Looking forward to seeing this farther along. As always my best to you and Patti, I may be passing thru in fall, I have a 7,000 mile road trip to do that will take me to California, up to Seattle, and then across the top of U.S. back to Florida. I'll be gone about 4 months, starting in July, if I am coming through Omaha, I will stop in. - Dan

Fantastic! I can't wait to see this in wood. This must take a tremendous amount a patience to go through to get to the finished piece.

Detailing the Clay

After a month of working with clay I have finally got the customers approval of Jesus on the cross. So far it's been a great experience learning human anatomy and learning so much about our Lord Jesus Christ, the little details and meaning behind each scar and location of the nails, ect.

The clay model is at 1/2 scale 36" tall and the wooden Crucifix will be full scale at 6 feet tall. I am really looking forward to gluing and carving. I miss working with wood since I am a wood worker I can see why. Good or bad please give me your opinion, Thank you!

Always inspiring to see your work Dennis. In this case, I'd have to think that the clay would be easier than doing the rendering in wood. With clay - you make a mistake, just glom another piece of clay on and redo it. Wood is a little less forgiving! I've always been amazed at marble sculptures by the Renaissance masters - the incredible detail and carved amazingly out of rock. I can't believe wood will be much easier.
Keep on sending out the updates. I'll always click and be humbled by your craftsmanship.
Thanks!
