I know there are a lot of pen turners here and hopefully they will chime in here, that being said I tried the CA method once and I prefer using GF Wood Turners Finish. I will have my pen turning at 100rpm and use a glue brush and put it on, I do several coats. Then use a portable heater to quicken the dry time. The finish is as strong as the finish they put on basketball courts. It does hold up. Not being experienced enough on the CA method it may be better and quicker once you get the hang of it. I do not make that many pens for the time to be of a factor so I can afford the time involved.

Yes, CA glue is a good finish for wood pens, not so sure about the best. If go to IAP web site and scroll down to FINISHING THREAD, some people just cannot get it right. Never had a problem applying a CA finish to pen.

Then there are people like me that have become sensitized to the stuff so stopped using it years ago. You can avoid becoming sensitive to CA, wearing PPE, and fan/dust collector to blow or suck fumes away from you.

I have used lacquer, oil & waterborne poly, and wiping varnish/poly finishes. Have used brush, dipping, spraying, and wiping, finishing methods and like them all. Wood species, grain/figure, close/open grain decides which finish and sheen to use.

CA can produce a very nice finish, but I prefer something that is far less toxic:

-Deft lacquer sealer cut 50/50 with lacquer thinner (dries in a couple of minutes)

-Hut Crystal Coat (I have substituted O.B.'s Shine Juice). Apply with lathe running slow, then crank up the speed (both HCC and Shine Juice are friction finishes). See: http://eddiecastelin.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/shinejuice.54184110.pdf

-Apply microcrystalline wax and buff (I use Ron Brown's Microcrystalline Wax, but you can substitute Renaissance Wax).

Rick, don't be an ass. There is nothing wrong with having questions. We can't all be master craftsmen like you.

I use CA glue and really like it. I just use the thin stuff from Lee Valley and the accelerant. I sand to 600 and then put on 6 coats then wax and buff. I like the way they look.

Would you like to take guess at what you can do with that "don't be an ass" Statement and the Sarcastic "We can't all be master craftsmen like you." Statement?

Did YOU check ALL of his Posts? No. Of course you didn't or you would have come to the same conclusion I did.

I also noticed that You have replied on a number of his Posts. How many Responses have you gotten back so far?

His Profile shows: "0" Projects, "0" Reviews, "0" Buddies. Get the point yet, Loose Lips?

I've seen to many of these guys on here and I've wasted to much time on them over the last Five Years!

They Take what they can Take and Give/Leave Nothing. OR. They play a game of never ending Questions on the Same Post.

Go and have a look at a few of his other Posts, (10 or so since November) then come back here and tell me I'm wrong.

I Posted what I Posted here, for a reason, That reason obviously never came to your mind. Did it?

In the meantime I'd strongly suggest that You WATCH YOUR MOUTH! Mr. J.A. Dobson!
