Hey Dan, to approach this problem. One, you can use a circular saw to make the initial cut and then work a jig saw to get the right size. If you are careful,you should be able to achieve success. Also, drill a hole in the end grain at the point of max height for the hooks. If you get a little over size, use some epoxy to help hold the hooks.
