Overview & Belt Sander Races

http://blip.tv/play/AYGSrUEA

We just got back from another great AWFS Fair in Las Vegas. If you aren't familiar, AWFS is the Association of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers and its a show that occurs every other year at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This is just a quick video to give you an idea of what the show is like. Booths and product displays as far as the eye can see and lots of neat stuff to drool over. I even have some footage of the all wood sports car, "The Splinter", as well as a quick look at the Belt Sander Races. And as if that wasn't enough, the one and only Matt Vanderlist from Matt's Basement Workshop makes a guest appearance at the end of the video! Tool demos and the student furniture exhibit will soon follow.

Some people have too much time on their hands to modify belt sanders like that

Not fans of the belt sander races eh? lol. After about three runs I was ready to leave myself…... But I promised a few folks I would get some footage of it…...
Some of the competitors really get into it!

AWFS is always a blast, even though this year we could see the effects of the economy in both corporate presence and attendance. But there were still some great products to see. In this video, you'll see the following demos:
Rockler: Tapering Jig, Box Joint Jig, Bench Cookies
Tenryu: Festool Blades, Silencer series
Kreg: Beaded Faceframe System
DeWalt: New Lithium Ion Battery technology
SawStop: Professional Cabinet Saw
Gorilla Gripper: The Gorilla Gripper

Wow…been reading the stuff coming out of the show. Wish I had the time to go….I like that new Saw Stop pricing…will have to see what folks say when it comes out….I hear they lightened up the trunnion and some other components to enable them to include the "newer" features….but the safety feature is just too good to pass up….It will definitely be on my list to review prior to getting a new table saw.

I like the idea of the gripper too….I have always hated when the darn panel slips out of my hands and lands on my upper instep….even with good boots that hurts….(thankfully I wear steel toe boots). Will have to check those out…

Thanks for sharing the videos….

saw stop is a good idea… but they dont tell you that you have to buy a new brake and blade every time you trip the saw. that can get quite expensive

always better than the alternative if you accidently get into the blade on a non-SawStop table saw…a small price to pay to save a finger

Hey WW:

Thanks for the video.
I particularly liked the new Rockler Bench Cookies.
Since I'm rustic, I made my own.

I used a 1/2" thick cellular rubber mat and cut them out with a circle cutter mounted in a drill press.
I glue two together to give me an extra lift off of my bench.
I'm from the South. So, I'm calling mine Bench Biscuits.

I made a lot of extras so my buddies can have some hot biscuits for their shops.
