A trial carving in Box Elder Trial #1

I was bored and out of mojo yesterday so I grabbed this piece of stump and relief carved out this ornamental flower on the face with a pattern and a 1/4 " spiral bit in a hand router.
I then fiddled around with a carver set and scooped out the petals a bit.
Sometimes it's good to try something you have no clue about.
I'm going to paint the flower and set the stump out among the flowers in spring.

p.s. you can see where I ploughed right through the bark in a couple of places. (lessons learned)
I will cut a template next time.

It's better than I could do. Nice incorporating the checking into the petals.

It looks like you had fun and learned some new tricks. I found out today that Rob Cosman is coming to the Boise WoodCraft store soon. The guys got a laugh from the story about you breaking his dovetails. There is a video dispaly there with his dovetails on it. He does some fine work indeed.

Looks like an amazing first plowing of the Box Elder. A little more practice and you will be even more amazed with yourself.

You guys are most generous.
I was surprised at how little talent I have. <g>
Definitely back to school for this trick.

p.s. Tom, I didn't break Mr. Cosmans DT joints.
He broke them with a poor command of English.
I trust he will rephrase his requests in future.

Great Flower. Bring it back when it's painted. And in place with the other flowers in the garden.

Ms. Debbie, some fellas tend to get a bit a head of themselves, perhaps for a better view.
It was not until my very first visit to Mr, Cosmans sideshow that I realized that I could never be a good crafts man until I purchased all his tools , bought his CD and attended his courses.
I knew then that I as doomed and might just as well forget about any contract work at the Sistine chapel.

The only thing that I carrry around in a sock is my foot!
Apologies to all who have found another use for them.
