Thanks for sharing the journey! Good story telling! Knew you could do it! LOL! Puts me in your projects.Apprenticeship
I started my apprenticeship in 1995 right before I started 11th grade. I had worked with my dad on our house since I was 10 years old and had worked many jobs mowing lawns and yard work. This was going to be my first time working a job that I did not make the rules. Not that my dad didn't tell me the right way to do everything!~ But this would be the first time I would have to be somewhere by the minute and be watched over and get paid. I loved it. The whole thing was great. I was able to work 7:30 to 5:30 everyday all summer long and 8:00 till 12:00 on Saturday which was a slow kind of clean and listen to the morning jazz coffee house on the radio.
I started out my first job was just to clean that morning and empty the cutoff wood cans and then later that morning we started doing hand rubbed oil on a jewelry box that was a big stand up one about 4' tall with drawers and two doors. They (another guy named John Smith and my Boss William Laberge) put the oil on and I was to wipe it all. I was doing so good and having fun, until the next morning. Come to find out I had missed a few spots in the oil and now I had to SAND it back smooth on all of the spots that I had missed. He set me up! I thought I did a pretty good job and I did but, pretty good is not good enough. So he had let the oil sit overnight and made fix it to see how much a pain in the butt it is when you do not do it and get every spot. Well it was like that with most of the learning in the shop. Unless it was something where I would get hurt or it would cost a lot of money. Learning was very slow and I cleaned and was there just to make things go a little faster. I made I think 4.25 an hour which I was happy at the time. I did not want school to come at all at this point. I new the first summer that I would be doing this for a very long time, but who new that I would have my old boss and his wife came visit and see my shop/office/showroom 18 years later this past April !!
