I am a woodworker who likes graphic design, page layout and typography. I have become pretty good with SketchUp and know Microsoft Publisher pretty well, so I began using the knowledge of these two programs to re-cap the construction of things I have built. Which lead to publically sharing woodworking plans. I have been designing and building furniture for more than 30 years, so I have a lot of projects to choose from for plan ideas.

My current woodworking plan which is in development features a small apartment dining table I designed and built more than 25 years ago. This table is still in use and has held up over the years very well. I always liked the design and thought it would also be a project which could help the beginning woodworker advance to a higher skill level. While I have sold woodworking plans in the past, I have made a decision to simply offer them for free going forward.

Here are some of the initial pages of the plan. I should have it completed in about a week or so…

Table Furniture Product Outdoor table Wood

I use a magazine style in landscape format.

Wood Rectangle Font Hardwood Parallel

Rectangle Font Parallel Output device Event

Rectangle Slope Font Parallel Plot

I try to make these plans as good as I can. To that end, here are two screen grabs of previous versions of page seven, which I am not going to use…

Rectangle Font Slope Parallel Screenshot

I felt the image at the bottom right was redundant, which lead to this page…

Rectangle Slope Font Plot Parallel

I did not like all the whitespace in the lower right.

Most every page of the plan has gone through the same critical process for arriving at the final page design and text.

I am in the process of completing page 12 of this plan. Just something I have fun with; I'll have more later.

Jeff, great idea. I also like sketchup but my write ups aren't as nice as yours.

Thanks Stevo. I have SketchUp Pro, but at present, I think MS Publisher is a better tool for page layout and such.

The Later Pages

So after much fussing with and tweaking of the woodworking plan I have been creating, I am just about finished with it.

Actually, I was finished with it last weekend until I decided to overhaul the content of page 11 and spread it out over two pages.

This is what page 11 originally looked like…

Slope Rectangle Font Parallel Engineering

I was never happy with the two images, one being a close-up of the other. With SketchUp, my illustration tool, as you zoom in to a particular part of a model, the perspective changes as the zoom occurs. I felt the images did not work together well. The answer was to break that page into two separate pages. See the result, and the rest of the new pages below…

Page 8 - note in the image at the upper left that some components are see-through while others are blue. Time consuming to do in SketchUp.

Page 9 - big color on this page.

There are two additional pages which I have not yet shown. I have been moving files to a new laptop and hope to have the completed plan uploaded tomorrow.

Thanks for reading,

Jeff

The Final Plan

Here is the finished woodworking plan. I could go on and on finding little things to adjust and fine tune, but I am calling it finished…

Nice work, Jeff, what software did you use? It seems to me that designing is more difficult than building it!

Thank you. I used SketchUp Pro for the illustrations, MS Publisher for the page layout and text, and both Photoshop and MS Paint for slight editing on just a few images.

I have SketchUp Pro's LayOut program but have found that MS Publisher provides more capabilities with text and such. I am also beginning to experiment with Adobe products, but just hate the thought of learning another complicated software program. :)

Hey Jeff,

I just had to drop you a note that I'm unbelievably impressed with your masterful blend of "old school" woodworking and your tech. Thank you so much for your generosity of spirit and sharing your efforts so selflessly. I may very well build a version of your apartment table someday. Keep up the good work, it's appreciated out there…

Captain,

Thanks for your kind words. "Masterful" is not a compliment I often get, so I appreciate it. If you ever build the table, please shoot me a photo of it. :)
