Anyplace special I should check out in St. Louis, MO.

My wife is the President of the Exchange Club of Lansing, MI. I believe it's a group of business reps. of the Lansing area that do much for charity, patriotism and good will in the Lansing area. Well their convention this year is in St. Louis, MO. and she asked them if she could take me and they all agreed that I'm such a great guy that I, no, no, I won't lie about it. They thought for safety's sake that it would be a good idea that I go. I'm just wondering if there are any jocks close or if there is anything special place we should see while we're there. We're leaving this coming Tuesday, 7/8. and staying until Sunday the 13th. Yes, I know about Anheuser Busch, but anything else as far as woodworking goes? Man, I am truly dreading this ride!!!

Mike:

Ethan is in St Charles about 20 miles west of St Louis.

He belongs to the St. Louis Woodworkers Guild and I think that there are about 3-5 members of the guild that are LumberJocks.

Try to send him a message.

There is an Internet site that sells wood in the St. Louis Area. I don't remember their name. I'll try to search them out.

Don't know about woodworking destinations, but the St. Louis Zoo is pretty cool.

I live about 60 miles east of St.Louis, and I get there every once in a while…

There is a Rockler on St.Charles Rock road, and a Woodcraft off of I-270. As far as specialty stores, I'm sure there are lots but I'm not too terribly familiar with them.

The one thing that you absolutley must do is go up in the Gateway Arch! They have an elevator that goes all the way to the top, and you can view St.Louis from the sky. I certainly wouldn't miss that.

We are staying at the Millinium Hotel Karson, and thanks for the heads up Betsy, but my wife had that on our agenda, and my brother was in the arch last year and told me to give it a go, he said though you got to scrunch up and it goes clickity click all the way up and down, he says its a little unnerving. Thanks for the Hibdon hardwood and the woodshop, I'll check em out while my wife is at meetings.

Mike - I agree about the Arch. I went up in it a couple of years ago when I was visiting my sister. You have to sit in the small cars (they look like eggs). I found it quite unnerving. Once you get up to the top, it's a beautiful view. But then you realize you have to go down and going down means those little egg carts. I'm glad I did it, but I'd never do it again. I have never thought of myself as scared of close spaces, but this little ride was more than I'd like to experience again. On the flip side, my sister thought nothing of the ride.

If you go to the Arch = there are several nice museums in walking distance to it that are worth checking out. I don't know if with all the flooding if the river boats are running, but those can be fun as well.

Hope you enjoy your trip.

Thanks Betsy, I am claustrophobic and have been for many years. Almost got me 4fed out of the service, but their Drs. were taking anyone in the draft at the time. There was an addict there in Fort Wayne, Detroit induction center that had needle marks up and down both arms even on his legs and between his toes and they took him. I heard the Dr. say "you don't have long to live, you may as well spend it serving your country," and he passed him. They could'nt even get blood out of the guy because all his veins had collapsed. That was in early 1970.

Mike. So you ride 500' up in the air in an Egg that clack and ratchets.

It's no big deal after the first one. The first one puts your heart in your throat, but it settles down after that. I've been up a half a dozen times. I lived in St. Louis for 15 yrs or so, but moved about 30 yrs ago. So it's probasbly very different from when i left.

I hope so, cause I promised the wife I'd do it. If you hear on CNN about a guy taking a header off the arch, you know it's me.

Just hold your wife's hand. It'll be alright. I promise! I lived to tell about it.

And besides Mike, there's no way to get out once you start up so no sense being afraid. By the way, once you are up, there's no way to take a "header" either. You're stuck coming down the same way you went up. In that blasted egg!

Depends on the size of the people. When I went up, my sister and I and one other very, very tall man fit into one egg. If it were not for the guy, probably could get 4 average adults into one egg. I had my doubts if that man would be able to unwind himself out of the egg - but he did it.

You'll enjoy the experience.

Have a great trip.

I maybe a little outof date on that. We used to have Supervisor Meetings for Southwestern Bell at the pub at the plant. They put on a great meal.

Well Karson I have'nt been into beer drinking in about 27 yrs. but the meal sounds great. Thanks for the steer to the woodshop, I will check them out. Along with the zoo and the arch. I hope the Mississippi is back where its supposed to be. I am not looking forward to driving through swamps. GBA. I hope they are alright by now. Thats a heck of a thing to go through. We were trying to find the shortest route and either way it looked like we are going to run into trouble.
