Wood Wood stain Grass Hardwood Trunk

My girlfriend who is a sculpting teacher at a local university found this outside the school studio. It may belong to a student, but she hasn't figured out who yet. If no one claims it, she'll probably bring it to me. Any Idea what it might be? it is bright yellow with some reddish color toward the center. Being that it is just a chunk of log, I would guess it grew around here in PA.

Black locust only has one or two sapwood rings. That is what I see in your pic. The color and the very narrow sapwood band would indicate black locust. If balck locust, all the pores will be totally occluded with tyloses, mulberry will have some open pores if viewed with a hand lens.
