I'm tuning all my planes and right now I'm working on my Stanley #90. This the smallest of their shoulder planes. I've watched a good shoulder plane tuning video on FWW by Chris Gochnour and it is all straight forward. BUT, I'm worried about the sole since it is coated with nickel like the rest of the plane. This is a sweetheart era plane and really don't want to degrade it but I feel it needs lapped just as any other plane. The one in the FWW video looks like a 93 but there is no mention about the finish in the video.

Should I be concerned about taking he nickel off the sole?

Sound advice fellas. The sole is fine but does merit a check with a straight edge. It's a worker. It was just a bonus that it was that old. This said, the iron was either never ground right or messed up by a previous owner. I think it was the previous.

I think we all agree it's gotta be flat. I will do what is necessary. I'll just be careful not to flake the finish on the sides of the body if I do lap it. Start with emery paper on granite and move on from there. Thanks for the input.
