Adding Corner Splines To A Box With Frontal Drawers
I've had some members inquire on how I add splines to my box drawers so I thought I'd put together a how-to on how I do it.
Your project might differ than mine but this will give you the how to along with the concept. My boxes consist of split drawers that require three cuts yours may consist of a single drawer that runs the length of the bottom of the box in which would require only a single cut the length of the box.
I'll try and explain as best as I can on the pictures below if you have any questions please feel free to ask.
Get all of your walls cut along with miters and pull the front wall aside.
Showing where the miters have been cut.
Measure the size of your drawer front and mark your cut line on the face of the front wall. You can use a tablesaw if you're only making a single cut the length of the box but a bandsaw is better as it doesn't remove as much material as a tablesaw blade.
Showing after pieces cut.
Sanding the blade marks.
Showing how they lay out.
I like to allow 5 mins for the end grain to soak up the glue then apply a second application of glue.
After everything has dried, what it looks like, once again your box will look different as you won't have an inner core box on the inside.
It's now time to glue your drawer fronts to your constructed drawers, I use 1/8" spacers set inside of the drawer cavity that lay on the back wall to set the drawers to stick up just enough so that the drawer fronts meet the drawer to be glued too and then tape and clamp.
Showing after the drawer fronts have been glued to the drawers.
Tape the drawers in place to the box and mark your spline cuts take care not to cut a spline where the drawer meets the box.
Showing where the drawer front meets the box, don't cut a spline in this area.
After splines have been cut.
Separate the drawers from the box.
Glue splines in place.
Once they've dried remove access on bandsaw.
Use a dremel tool with a #60 sanding drum to remove the spline that you're not able to reach with a blade.
After you've sandier the access away.
The final outcome.
