Abralon Sanding Disks - is a pad protector needed?

Do you need the sanding pad protector for your ROS when using Mirka Abralon sanding disks with the foam rubber between nylon sanding mesh and the velcro hooks on your sanders pad?

I know there is a current post on the Mirka Abranet mesh only disks without the foam rubber pads. But did not want to hack that post so started this one.

I have an acquaintance that uses them on a Mirka ROS and they give an amazing finish. So I shelled out some bucks for the 500 and 1000 grit Abralon disks.

I have a fairly new Dewalt 5" ROS. Like it ok.

No need for the interface pad on those.

Thanks, what I needed to know. Don't want to screw up my newish sander hooks. We used friends sander and Mirka disks on my coffee table.

He reason for the backing pad is to preserve the hooks in the main pad. Since the Abranet mesh is so open, the hooks will get rubbed down and the hooks won't work. A new main disk is A LOT more expensive than the replaceable backing pads. I have a Mirka Deros and only use abranet mesh sanding disks. I use the 500 and 1000 grit frequently when sanding between finish coats.
