start up with some scraps

Ok. Had a few Pine scraps…too large for the fire pit, might as well build something…one plank was a might too narrow, and a bit too thin…..and had a big old knot..
Table Wood Hardwood Tool Wood stain

Knot had to go…cut the "good" ends at 8" long….
The other boards?
Wood Rectangle Office ruler Wood stain Hardwood

A 1×10,,,had a few issues….a pitch pocket, and a knot just waiting to fall out….board #3?
Wood Wood stain Floor Flooring Hardwood

Also had those two issues, plus a wany edge…the 1×4 will be used as a stretcher….marked the bad sections out, and ripped them out with the bandsaw….
Wood Lumber Gas Metal Composite material

May be able to use these scraps for jigs? Set the 3 pieces together..
Wood Hardwood Plank Gas Wood stain

Hmm..been using that Stanley No.3c lately….maybe clean some edges with it?
Wood Gas Automotive wheel system Auto part Automotive tire

I had already used it the match up the two pieces for the legs….and even cleaned the face grain…
Plane Wood Hand tool Rebate plane Tool

Went ahead and marked the leg blanks, and made a few cuts…
Wood Hardwood Art Flooring Composite material

set these two aside, with the stretcher. Jointed a few edges on the other three parts
Wood Saw Automotive tire Machine tool Tool

Getting better at ripping, didn't need quite so much to get an edge straight…set the first two up on the bench, to check for gaps….left them sit there, while I jointed #3..
Wood Gas Metal Composite material Motor vehicle

They never so much as wiggled. That one board needed trimmed down a bit, to match the other two….and get rid of the nasty grained, crooked end…
Wood Floor Flooring Hardwood Machine tool

Works for me. Laid the three together, trying for the best grain match..
Wood Wood stain Hardwood Plank Lumber

Not too bad? Glue and clamps..
Wood Table Gas Machine Auto part

Will let this sit a day….set the legs up, where they will go..
Wood Gas Creative arts Art Engineering

Something like this? Then a stretcher in between? Will cut the stretcher blank a bit..
Saw Wood Tool Hardwood Lumber

As this is just too blocky….Through mortise and tenons, wedged with a wedge of Walnut…
Just a simple pine stool…stay tuned..

Day 2 and three

Both trips to the shop were a bit short….one was governed by how long the dryer needed to run…the other was until the back said STOP.

Got the panel out of the clamps…and planed flat.
.

Still using that same old plane…
Stretcher got some lines drawn on it, and sent to the bandsaw…came back like this..

Used it to lay out for two mortises..

Note to self: LEAVE the lines…better fit that way…

Dry fit…also marked which way the wedges will go….and dug out the stick of Walnut, to make the wedges…

Clothes were dry…leg was sore…Day Two was done….
Ok, Day three….ONE yard sale this morning….meh. House sat for a while…then after supper, went to the shop..

Laid out for 6 mortises…with the center points marked…Drill press had a Forstner bit in the chuck, and a scrap of pine. That way, I don't blow out the other side when the holes were drilled…

Drilled the holes…

Laid out some spokeshaves, for later, in the hopes that one of them would be sharp enough..

Ok, square tenons do not fit into round holes, too well..

Hammer and an Aldi's chisel seemed to work just fine…dry fit?

Repeat for the other end, then a full dry fit ( for now…)

Clamp because the stretcher was a hair long…..Knock things back apart..

Kerfs on the ends of the stretcher were easy to do,,,bandsaw…these three were a different matter.. Kerfs are for the wedges. Then the spokeshave was used..

Just to ease the edges a bit….didn't feel like getting out the corded Router…While things were still together, drew a few lines on the top..

Ease the corners, and mark the ends for square…bandsaw for both…it also cut a few wedges from the stick of Walnut..

Back was hurting, time to stop..

Twas Quitting Time!....Maybe tomorrow, I can get the bottle of glue used? Do a bit of assembly?

Stay tuned…

Day #4, glue ups, clean ups, and a PIP?

4 days to build a simple, little stool? getting slow?
Ok, wasn't too happy with the surface left by the spokeshave…..ran this router around, with the smallest round-over bit I had..
Motor vehicle Hand tool Tool Metalworking hand tool Wood

Even rounded over both the top and bottom edges of the top…
Wood Hardwood Auto part Engineering Lumber

And, each part was sanded to 180 grit….then the glue….discovered later that one wedge was too fat…as I hammered in the two to connect the stretcher to the legs…..OOoooops.
I did get all 6 wedges in place for the top, without too many problems…
Wood Motor vehicle Engineering Gas Machine

Two of the tops wedges were acting "funny".....got to looking at the legs, again….they were made from a glued up panel sold at Lowes…..one of the glue joints was trying to come apart….needed clamps and more glue to fix the splits going on..

The fat wedge for the stretcher, was also doing a split….it also prevented things from closing up tight…orange clamp for that…..Let this mess sit most of the day….

Later, after supper, removed the clamps…sanded the wedges down flush..

End view? Time for a PIP?

From the side….this is not all that big of a project….top is 11-3/4" long,, by 8-1/2" wide. Stands 8" tall…

A view of the top….almost hard to tell there is three boards in the top..

Underside. That is about it, for the woodworking part…will post when the finish is done….Boss wants it for either a foot rest, or a plant stand….

Thanks for looking in!
