A Resaw Adventure

A back story

Getting bored, just sitting around, resting up a messed up knee….one experiment today, was to try the steps down to the Dungeon Wood Shop…and see how I manage….just me, not carrying anything in my hands…camera went along, sitting in my pants pocket….at least until I arrived in the shop…..had to brush a few cob webs away….spiders were trying a take-over?

Moved a few things off of the tablesaw….there is a 1×6 plank I want to try to resaw….knee willing..

Not quite 2' long…Ash leftover. IF this works out, I MIGHT be able to cobble a box from just this one board…crank the saw blade up a bit…somewhere around 1-1/2" tall. and set up a rip fence…

Mayb a 1/16" over 3/8" space between the blade and the fence. Board is 7/8" thick….has a very slight cup to it. Thinking here is the thicker part will have the cup feature…..the other will come out at 3/8" thick….I run all four edges through, keeping one face against the fence..

That includes the end grain…Effects of the cup can be seen….lines don't quite line up…as for the other end..

was a bit tricky…keeping this vertical for the cut….

Ok, unless there is anymore "leftovers" sitting around..I am done with the table saw….there is a 3" or so strip right down the center….that needs sawn….and NO, I am NOT using the bandsaw for that…..makes more waves in the cut, than the North Sea in Winter…..and usually tries to just burn its way through…

We have ways….

Disston D8 thumbhole Rip saw….5-1/2 ppi….28" in length…and was sharpened not all that long ago…this is right at the start…c clamp to help keep the board still….otherwise, it will just tumble forward…..I use as much of the blade as I can…

At about the 5 minute mark….note the saw dust? I also tried out a 7 ppi saw..a D-115 I think… to see IF it would cut any faster…..NOPE….knee was starting to complain a bit….as I was using it to help push the saws along….got almost to the 1/2 way point, knee had had just about enough….will try again tomorrow….

Goal is to cut to about halfway down, the rotate the board to where I am coming down from the other end….keeping an eye out, in case the cut wants to go a bit off to one side or the other. Not trying to see how FAST I can cut this….but how well. Because, once the boards are sawn, a hand plane will come along and smooth things out….in theory….

There IS a 6' version of this plank, still upstairs….if I need a bit extra, I could cut what I need from it…

Stay tuned….

To complete the cut…left the plywood spacer in place….what was the top is now the bottom.

Start here….the saw is about..100+ years old….Disston No. D8…where the "8" is inside of the "D"...5-1/2 ppi, 28" long…big saw… Once it gets going, a spray of sawdust shoots out, all over the place. At about the 3 minute mark..

A nice steady…not too fast, not too slow ….had to stop for a bit, switched the hands around, so I was sawing with my left hand..at about the 5 minute..

Things started to bind a bit….to make it easier, I added that strip of Ash….another couple strokes..POP..and no more could be made…resaw was complete…
Set the 2 halves out on the bench…

Not too bad? Once the knee allows it, I'll plane these two smooth and flat….edges need work, ends need squared…the usual stuff….have a smaller piece of scrap to resaw..
Wood Hardwood Lumber Composite material Plank

maybe next time I can get down the stairs to the shop?

Had to be careful, when hanging up the saws, when I was done…

Rip saw wanted to argue about it…and bounced lightly onto my arm….ow….
Hmm..

It got hung up, anyway. other saw is the D-112 ( I think..might be a 115? ) and is a very good cross cut saw.

Stay tuned..might see what I can build with this mess….

Ouch, Bandit! I've had both knees replaced and multiple back surgeries, and know it's no fun. Glad I got the knees done though. The titanium replacements have been mostly trouble free.
