A box for chisels

they need a home

Had a bunch of "second-line" chisels..

While not "Premium" by any means, they deserve something a little better than just rolling around in a drawer, somewhere. Since there was still some Poplar left over from the last projects…

Thought I could cobble a box with these….bench had been cleaned off….99% of the tools I would need were put away…..and the doors closed up…
Wood Rectangle Art Wood stain Gas

Time to go.."shopping"....Opened those doors back up, and see what I'll need to get out…before the doors slam shut, again..
Wood Tool Toolroom Metalworking hand tool Engineering

Well, the door on the right held hammers and drills…I'll need a mallet..
Hand tool Shoe Product Tool Metalworking hand tool

Turn to the left a bit….I'll need a couple marking tools, including a bevel gauge, and a marking gauge…

In the Red Rack, there were a couple small squares, below that, a marking knife….Saws?

Might need a coping saw, later, but.

For right now, I'll need that Disston No. 68, Dovetail saw…..lay the tools over on the bench, as I went along, not really a shopping cart, but, it will have to do..and close the doors..
Wood Hand tool Tool Metalworking hand tool Engineering

Needed to set up a work light, right over where I'll be working..
Wood Gas Machine Engineering Metal

So that I'm not working in me own shadow…...Also, got out the shop stool, and cleaned the seat off…as I like to sit down while doing "Joinery Work"

While most of the ends were sawn square…..there was one that somehow avoided that…we have ways..

Time to move most of the tools to the Tool Well, where they aren't tempted to simply roll off the bench….

Next Episode? Hand cut through dovetails…

Stay tuned…

Dovetail work...

Ok, the main reason I am building a box for these, is this..
Table Wood Drawer Shotgun Hardwood

As this is NOT a way to treat chisels….so…may be building a few more?

Dovetails: I do mine as Pins first…YMMV…but it just seems I have better luck doing the pins first….so

First from that pile of tools, is a marking gauge…
Automotive tire Wood Gas Automotive wheel system Auto part

From the pin to the fence is the same as the thickness of the piece I am trying to use….usually the Ends of the box, as the pins will be in the sides of the box. Idea is to mark where the joint ends..
Wood Natural material Wood stain Office ruler Plank

I then use the knife to deepen the lines (Baseline?) and then use a pencil to darken the lines…so I can see them better…then, stand the "Pin board" up in the vise..
Wood Gas Brick Machine Engineering

So I can mark out the pins. Angle? I use what will look right to me. Don't want it too broad in the beam, nor to narrow that my chisels can't get in….I do have to chop these, after all…I start with a 1/2 pin on each edge, and work towards the center. Doesn't matter how wide a board is, just seems to work better, that way…next..
Wood Composite material Gas Flooring Hardwood

The little combo square is also set to the thickness of the tail board, I use it to draw lines for the saw to follow, in making a few cuts….I do both faces. I can either miss the line on either side, or split the line ( I try for the split) as the tails will be traced from whatever the pins wind up looking like….then
Wood Metalworking hand tool Gas Wood stain Plank

I drop the board as low as I can….cuts down on any vibration…easier to saw, too..and start. Saw all the lines.
Wood Hand tool Crosscut saw Metalworking hand tool Tool

I then set up a block to chop on, instead of my bench….get a selection of chisels…and clamp the pin board face up with a clamp….I then deepen the knife wall a bit. then chop about 1/2 way down…
Wood Metalworking hand tool Gas Air gun Hardwood

And leave a little porch. Idea behind the show face first, is to prevent any blow outs when chopping from the inside, the porch adds a bit of support, as well…once this face has been chopped, flip the board over, and repeat the chops, this time the goal is to get the waste out..
Wood Wood stain Hardwood Gas Lumber

I also mark which is the inside of each piece…comes in handy in a little bit. Sometimes, there are little nubs left inside the waste area…that coping saw can be used as a rasp..
Hand tool Wood Metalworking hand tool Tool Brickwork

To clean things out….Now the fun can begin….take the pin board, and stand it up on the end of the tail board…note which way is "inside" and make sure both boards match that…otherwise, something will wind up bass-ackwards….Hold the pin board steady, and use a sharp pencil to trace around each pin..and across the inside of one pin….you can set a square to cut a baseline across.
Wood Rectangle Hardwood Plank Composite material

Should come out like this…make sure the pin board doesn't move while tracing around. Straighten the lines…then comes the bandsaw part. I use a bandsaw because I have issues hand sawing a bevel line….the bandsaw allows me to better see and control the cuts….I also add a few extra cuts…easier to get the waste out….bandsaw is to cut on the waste side of the lines, make sure you mark which is which..
Wood Rectangle Brick Plank Building material

Something like this. Goal is to leave the line…the more of the line you leave, the tighter the joint will be. Then, back to the chopping block, show face first, again..
Wood Rectangle Brick Red Paint

Just like on the pins, leave a little. then flip the board over, and finish the chops…
Wood Grey Line Brick Wall

I also number the parts for each joint. this is the first corner I am doing, so each side has a #1 right by the joint…don't want a #3 pin board in a #2 tail board….about time for a dry fit…usually a mallet is needed..
Wood Gas Wood stain Hardwood Rectangle

Not too hateful? Now, all that is needed, is to do the next 3 corners the same way…if possible…
Wood Rectangle Composite material Gas Window

That one loose corner? Somebody split a line…was the last corner of the day…oops. should glue up nice enough..

And that is it…next episode? Going to get Groovy..and maybe a glue up?

Stay tuned…

The Plywood Adventure....and a glue up

Floor had been swept..

Much nicer on the feet. Used the dry fitted box..
Wood Table Gas Rectangle Outdoor bench

To help measure what size panels I needed….and then marked out for the cuts..
Wood Composite material Rectangle Gas Flooring

Not the handiest thing to move around…the Framer's Square did help laying out, and marking lines, for me to try and follow on the bandsaw ( tablesaw? nah, it is too busy as a storage spot).....so, while trying to follow/leave the lines..
Wood Rectangle Grey Road surface Automotive exterior

I soon had 2 panels cut out….edges were a bit wavy…junior jack plane to "joint" the edges straight….They should fit right in…right?
Well, a full dry fit was done…just to see…
Wood Hardwood Wood stain Gas Composite material

Well, panel length was good…but..
Wood Hardwood Gas Composite material Lumber

Panels were too wide…won't let the dovetails seat…so, back to the vise they go, and get Junior to work..
Wood Tool Saw Machine tool Gas

Want to skin just under 1/8' off, and still have them match each other…then back to the dry fit
Wood Outdoor bench Table Rectangle Gas

Fit was much better. I also wanted to find out WHERE to make the saw cut to remove the lid, once the box is glued up…fattest of the chisel handles….make sure I mark somewhere on the OUTSIDE of the box, so I can find it, again

then..mark everything as to "Top", or Bottom, including the plywood panels….
Wood Rectangle Automotive exterior Flooring Gas

Then the fun can begin….even used a brush to help spread/contain the glue…and a few cauls..
Wood Gas Composite material Lumber Machine

Always fun, when adding 2 cauls, and a clamp, then trying to tighten then all down…with just 2 hands…

Will let this sit a day….

Stay tuned…

Flipping a lid

Ok….box came out of the clamps looking a bit rough around the edges, on a Monday ( so did I, for that matter)

Sander and a #4 handplane to smooth things out. Square pegs were cut and glued into the square holes…had to go back and look at a photo..to see where the marks were…so I can saw the lid off…found it!
Wood Outdoor bench Table Rectangle Gas

Then looked for that spot on the box, hoping I didn't plane it off…then got out a few toys..
Hand tool Wood Tool Stonemason's hammer Bumper

Marking gauge set to the distance between the top of the soon-to-be lid, and the cut line. The square was also set…so I could darken the saw lines to where I could see them. utility knife will come in handy, later.

Now, there was a debate about which saw to use….tried the 3 bigger saws, at least to start a cut…too floppy, too rough of a cut…the No. 4 backsaw was still in the tool chest….Dovetail saw? meh…decided to re-arrange that Bishop saw a bit…..flip the blade over, going from 9ppi to 15ppi…raise the bar a bit….about middle of the blade.

Marking gauge was run around all the sides…about 5-6 passes per side. Traced the line with a pencil…and start on a corner of the end…

Wanted both corners cut first, then lower the saw down and complete the cut….but, only on the ends of the box…
Wood Plank Wood stain Hardwood Lumber

Since this is held in the vise…I didn't want to cut all the way through with the saw, causing it to bind. I was waxing the blade as it was. Got the long sides sawn almost all the way through…left a little tab at the bottom of the cut.

Then finish the cut with the utility knife…
Plant Wood Rectangle Natural material Composite material

Then set it out on the bench…raise the lid..
Wood Rectangle Flooring Floor Gas

And dump the pile of sawdust out…Then check the fit…needed a little work with a smooth plane..
Saw Wood Motor vehicle Hand tool Metalworking hand tool

Kind of level the edges, and smooth out the saw marks…on both the lid, and the box…and check the fit, again..
Wood Hardwood Composite material Gas Rectangle

And that was it, for a Monday in the shop….didn't want to press my luck..

Tuesday was to be a rest day…that was a LOT of handsaw work…and plane…shoulders were sore..
So, maybe next episode, some hardware? Maybe some dividers to hold the chisels? Maybe even a PIP?

Stay tuned…

When sawing open a box, I saw one corner open, then move to the adjacent corner, then stick a few old business cards or a card scraper in there, then flip the box and saw the other side (one corner at a time if the box is longer than my saw). The cards keep things from binding as I get close to opening the box.

I keep thinking one of these times I'm going to put the hinges on before cutting open the front of the box, but I always forget in the "excitement."

Tuesday's rest day?

Not exactly…..Finally, was just going to look at the hardware box….to see what hinges, latches, and handles were left…..Not much….some more fiddling with how the lid and box fit together….had the box assembled, and clamped in the vise…was using the #4 to smooth out a couple bumps on the back of the box….

Then, this happened..
Table Wood Rectangle Wood stain Hardwood

had to cut the head off of a small, skinny nail, and chuck it into my cordless drill…pilot holes…dug out the fancy screwdriver to drive those very tiny screws….Ok…

turned the box over in the vise….more smooth plane work…then it happened again..

T'would seem that this is the latch that was chosen…..started to work on the ends…

Handles! These were supposed to get nailed on? Ah..no..not this time…I have more than enough screws on hand…

Got to thinking about HOW to stack 7 chisels in the box….decided to use up a bit of skinny scraps..
Wood Gas Metalworking hand tool Tool Facade

Smear the backs of the parts with glue…there is a cross piece under the chisels bolsters….and..seems I gained a chisel?
And THAT was it for Tuesday….shoulders were still sore…and this didn't help all that much…Wednesday will be a better day, I hope..

Stay tuned…

Rounding the corners, and a PIP

Got to looking at those sharp, square edges along the lid's top….decided to at least round them over a bit….
Wood Tool Office equipment Flooring Automotive exterior

Since the Stanley 45 couldn't do the job, I figured a block plane could at least round over the outside edges…I only have one gouge in the entire shop. Block plane, I simply make a bunch of passes along the outside edge, tipping the plane to the outside a little with each pass..

It would also work on the inside..until the plane hit the ends….That is the job of that gouge…same as the plane, make a few passes, tipping the gouge a bit more as I went….

Where the gouge was having issues….Then, after getting everything close to round over….a bit of sanding to smooth things out….all the while, the chisels inside the box were rattling around…time to pad the lid a bit..
Wood Rectangle Gas Typesetting Roof

Used a couple thin strips, to get even with the edge of the lid…aligned with the bolsters of the chisels….glued the strips together, and to the lid….cut a bot of padding to size…and glue that in….was worried that the padding may come loose later….so two strips were cut to size, and glued into place at the ends…emptied the box of loose chisels, and then stained the entire insides…except where the padding was….
Wood Gas Bullet Idiophone Metal

Once it was wiped down inside, I could replace the chisels back into the box….didn't want to dribble stain on the chisels…

Then, closed the lid, and stained the outside…

Intend to let things dry a day…then apply a top coat of clear gloss varnish..and let that dry a while, before I rub things down….then see how it looks….
