2 LJ's for the price of one
I am a guy who likes a deal. I scan the flyers for discount coupons, special sales, and twofer specials. Yesterday, I got the best deal I have mustered in quite some time.
Two Lumberjocks for the price of one!
I went over Mike's
yesterday to do some woodturning and Rick
, another LJ member was there. At first I was confused as I didn't recognize "Rustic" without his tuxedo when he greeted me and I thought Mike had some plastic surgery done to make himself look younger and more good looking. Sadly for Mike, that was not the case, but a joy for me to meet another lumberjock.
When I say "woodturning" that really means that I drink Mike's beer and coffee, spend 15 minutes on the lathe, and then talk for hours. I am sure he wonders if I actually do anything or just claim this "woodworking" hobby because I am lonely. This time was different, as I drank Mike's beer and coffee AND ate his powdered donuts, talked for hours, and spent a couple hours on the lathe. Rick was a joy to meet, learn about his love for the hobby (and I have to say that his appreciation for Mike is just on the earthly side of divine), and indulge in friendly chat and banter. Nice to know another LJ in Michigan that I can hit up for beer and coffee in the future.
Mike is initiating me in bowl turning. The piece I am working on (will do pictures in the future) had much checking in it. Not a piece I would have thought to turn. It was amazing to me to watch Mike's process of applying CA glue, rubbing in some sawdust, then spraying it all with an activator, all to keep the piece from splitting apart. I finally started working on the hollowing and have a good portion of it done. While doing so, I got to enjoy such lovely banter as …
"Hey Mike, I think I am having some problems with this chisel. It keeps putting straight lines on the bowl."
"Well Dave, it will do that sometimes, especially when you are holding that chisel upside down!"
"Mike, I think I am going to have problems cleaning up the hollow with this scraper. I accidentally took the bowl off the chuck and it is out of center now."
"Dave, did you try re-chucking the bowl so it would be centered again?"
"No Mike, if I did that, it would make too much sense…You know you could have said something…"
"Well Dave, I just wanted you to learn from your mistakes…"
"Yeah Mike, but if I wanted to learn from my mistakes, would I be here?"
Ahhh "Men Talk". I think I finally arrived
Thanks Mike and Rick for a very enjoyable day. Next time, I will make sure I bring some beer so I don't appear like a total freeloader
